The Tavistock Titans secured their second consecutive victory after overcoming a young, energetic Plymouth University Sharks side 59-54 in a thrilling basketball overtime encounter.

The Titans were forced to dig deep in a closely contested game, eventually producing a strong performance in the extra period to secure a hard-fought five-point victory on Wednesday, October 28.

The contest began defensively, with both teams playing with intensity. Plymouth deployed zone defence, a tactic troubling Tavistock in previous encounters. However, the Titans improved, moving the ball effectively and attacking the zone with greater confidence and fluidity.

The teams were evenly matched throughout, with neither establishing a commanding lead. Tavistock entered the fourth quarter trailing by six points but responded by increasing their defensive intensity and physicality.

The Titans fought their way back into contention, although Plymouth refused to surrender their advantage.

With the scores level and just 30 seconds remaining, Tavistock created an excellent opportunity from beyond the three-point line. The shot narrowly missed, leaving the Sharks with a final possession and the chance to secure victory.

However, Plymouth’s attempt also fell short, sending the game into overtime.

The added period proved decisive, as Tavistock raised their game. A series of crucial steals, defensive stops and well-timed baskets allowed the Titans to gain control.

The five-point victory marked another important step forward for Tavistock, who continue to build momentum following their opening-game defeat.

Ryan Penrose was named the Titans’ Most Valuable Player for several crucial three-pointers, including a decisive shot in overtime helping secure the victory, while playing a major defensive role.

Tom Exley also delivered an outstanding defensive display. After spending much of the game battling Plymouth’s bigger players inside.

Josh Douglas led Tavistock’s scoring while making a significant defensive contribution. His impact was obvious during overtime, when a crucial steal followed by a fast-break lay-up helped swing momentum firmly in the Titans’ favour.
