Jaylen Brown addressed Jayson Tatum’s public comments about their relationship on Saturday night. Tatum, the Boston Celtics star, had talked about it at length the day before, after his team’s home opener, stating that there was no beef between them.
Brown, now a Philadelphia 76ers guard after being traded from Boston in July, largely agreed with Tatum but not before adding a caveat of his own.
Addressing his former teammate’s observation about their relationship, Brown started with a caveat before getting to what Tatum had said. “I didn’t see the full thing, but I saw that he said it’s no beef, and I think he’s right. It’s no beef.”
The 2024 NBA Finals MVP praised Tatum but also offered a twist in his assessment. “Jayson comes from a wonderful family. He’s a hell of a basketball player. He got a great PR team. It’s no beef, but might be a little lamb chops and some gravy. He should stay ready at all times.”
Brown harped on Tatum’s PR team more than a few times in that exchange with reporters after his Sixers dispatched the Milwaukee Bucks for their third straight win.
The latest series of exchanges stems from Tatum’s YouTube documentary series, “Summer of Jayson,” wherein the Celtics star detailed his reaction to Brown’s move to the Sixers.
On Thursday, Brown left a comment on an Instagram video of Tatum’s remarks, and by Friday, the relationship between the two was a hot topic across the league.
When asked about Brown’s Instagram quip, Tatum steered the conversation toward what the pair accomplished in Boston and said, “It should be celebrated, right? Like how many people played in this league and never went to the Finals. We went twice and won a championship, so it should be more about that. This ain’t no Shaq and Kobe. Like there’s no beef or, you know. It’s not about that.
“It should be more praise, and I understand that don’t necessarily sell drama, gets clicks and views, but I’m not like really into [it]. That’s not my thing,” he added.
Their beef narrative aside, the two have started their first seasons apart in different places.
Brown’s 76ers are 3-0, beating the New York Knicks and the Cleveland Cavaliers before Saturday’s 127-116 win over the Bucks, which saw Brown record 27 points, 5 assists, and 3 steals.
The Celtics, meanwhile, are 1-1 after opening the season with a loss to the Detroit Pistons before grabbing a 107-103 win against the defending champions.
The Sixers and Celtics play on Nov. 10 at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia, and this reignited debate between the two teammates-turned-rivals will only beef up the storyline for their first regular-season clash.
