Slowly, Harry Kane’s penalty record at Bayern Munich is losing its shine. He missed a critical penalty against Wehen Wiesbaden in the DFB-Pokal first round last season (before scoring an injury-time winner, to be fair), he missed his first Bundesliga penalty against VfL Wolfsburg that same season (Bayern still won 1-0 anyway), and he recently missed one for England against Spain. Add those misses to his recent miss against Borussia Dortmund and, gasp, Kane is starting to look slightly less than perfect from the spot.
Not that Kane is inexperienced enough to lose his head about it. Though he has now missed two of his last three penalties, he knows the stat definitely does not represent his overall quality from the penalty spot.
“The preparation is the same,” he confirmed in the press conference ahead of the Champions League match against Atlético Madrid. “Sometimes you go through these moments. When I arrived at Bayern I scored 20-something in a row, or 30 in a row, obviously missed a couple now, which isn’t ideal. I think when you do something for so long and you do it well, people expect it to be easy, and I’ve always tried to say that’s not the case, it takes a lot of practice. If I get one tomorrow night, I’d love to be able to put it in the back of the net,” said Kane (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
It was a little anticlimactic for the recent Ballon d’Or winner to celebrate the award by missing his penalty, but still, only a very brave soul would bet on him extending his penalty-miss streak. If he can put the latest miss behind him against Atlético and bury one against the Spanish giants, then it will be all the better.
