Wyndham Clark’s family affair at the Mexico Open did not go to plan.
The two-time US Open winner had his brother on the bag in Mexico and hoped to help pay for his wedding with the prize money. Instead, Clark missed the cut by two strokes in one of his worst performances of the season.
Clark has been in fine form of late and is in the midst of a bounce back season, so this week was an anomaly. But what he said about his brother in the week’s build-up is a clue as to what happened to his golf game.
Clark lost 3.31 strokes to the field on approach, and 1.43 strokes to the field with his putting. These are the two areas of the game where caddying matters most, and they cost Clark in Mexico.
That is hardly surprising, considering Clark admitted his brother gave him the wrong yardages the last time he caddied for him at Colonial.
How did you end up falling in love with the game?
Speaking to SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio in the build-up to the Mexico Open, he said, “He ChatGPT’d the stats of the golf course and looked it up relative to my stats, but what was funny is they changed the routing of the golf course, added new holes, so all that went out the window.
“He was trying to do all this hard work, and none of it was going to help.”
It’s hard to know whether Clark’s performance was down to poor caddying or whether he just missed putts and his swing was off, but judging by his comments about his brother, he really could have done with a professional caddie on the bag.
