Perfect twelve for Newbury Town as Luffrum hits treble

Newbury Town maintain their formidable start to the Thames Valley Premier League season on Saturday, cruising to a comprehensive 4-0 victory away at AFC Winkfield.

The latest victory makes it 12 wins from 12 matches for the Faraday Road outfit, currently on track to grant their manager’s promotion wish.

A second-half hat-trick from striker Harrison Luffrum wrapped up another dominant afternoon for Devonn Reid’s side, who registered yet another clean sheet to bolster an astonishing campaign tally that now stands at 60 goals scored and just three conceded.

Reid said: “It was one of those days for us, we got the early goal, dominated the play – it was the other way around this time – normally we start fast and we are scoring a load of goals early doors, but this time round it just wouldn’t fall for us.

“We were hitting the crossbar, keeper was making some good saves.

“Then the second-half, I spoke to the boys about what they’ve got to do, and then the goals just came.

“There was more opportunities, more chances, more crossbars, more posts, more great saves – it was good in the end, we got there.

“Very comfortable game to be fair.”

The visitors hit the ground running at the Locks Ride Recreation Ground, breaking the deadlock after just six minutes.

Stanley Jeffries continued to repay manager Reid’s faith in his selection, with the promising young midfielder coolly dispatching the opener, adding another goal to his season.

Despite controlling much of the play, Newbury were forced to remain patient for the remainder of the first-half.

A combination of resolute Winkfield defending and misfortune in front of goal prevented the away side from expanding their lead, sending both teams into the interval with just the single goal separating them.

However, the second half proved to be a vastly different affair as Newbury stepped up a gear.

The turning point came ten minutes after the restart when Luffrum latched onto a slick, perceptive pass through the Winkfield defense, steering a clever finish past the keeper to double the visitors' advantage.

Reid turned to his bench shortly after, and a flurry of substitutions injected fresh energy into the Town ranks.

The pressure paid dividends in the 77th minute.

Luffrum picked up the ball just inside the box and unleashed a left-footed, low bullet into the bottom-right corner to make it 3-0 and put the result beyond any lingering doubt.

Eight minutes later, the striker got his opportunity to claim the match ball when Newbury were awarded a penalty.

Showing no nerves, Luffrum stepped up to slot a firm, low spot-kick into the goal, smashing the ball back into the netting in celebration.

Having secured his treble, Luffrum was given a well-earned breather on the bench as Newbury comfortably managed the closing stages to seal all three points.

Town face another test this coming Saturday when they make the short trip to Barlows Park to face local rivals Tadley Calleva Reserves.
