Kinawley ready to bring the fight to Devenish

DEVENISH have the muscle, the firepower and the experience, but Kinawley have no intention of rolling over and letting John McNulty’s men have their day in the sun.

With a championship on the line tonight (Saturday), bragging rights up for grabs and two sides packed with top players, this one has all the ingredients for a heavyweight showdown in Enniskillen.

In goals for Devenish, Thomas Treacy gives his side a great platform from which to launch attacks, with his pinpoint kickouts and accuracy from frees.

Treacy has some big targets to hit around the middle in Malachy O’Flanagan, Jason Love and Conall Maguire, who provide a strong aerial presence for John McNulty’s side.

Matched all over

Devenish are defensively solid, with Tadhg O’Brien and captain Conor McGowan marshalling the rearguard, while former county star Barry Mulrone adds strength and physical power.

They have also been boosted by the return of Fionán O’Brien, who is back on the field after suffering a serious injury during the inter-county season.

O’Brien is one of the county’s top players. Calm on the ball, he can pick out a pass with either foot or hand and is always willing to take on a score when within range of his trusty right boot.

His return is particularly timely, with Devenish reportedly set to be without influential midfielder Lanty Feely, who picked up an injury in a recent challenge game.

Up front, Devenish possess a potent forward line led by the classy Cian O’Brien, who kicked an incredible 14 points in their semi-final win over Tempo.

He is complemented by the lively Jamie Flanagan and Jarlath O’Brien.

Who could begrudge Terry O’Flanagan and Martin O’Brien, two of Devenish’s stalwarts and longest-serving players, the chance to enjoy another memorable championship success in Enniskillen?

Well, Shaun Doherty’s Kinawley will certainly have something to say about that.

Nothing separating them

Despite being pushed to extra-time in their semi-final against Derrylin, Kinawley have looked impressive throughout the championship.

The Brian Borus are a team in transition, with a number of young players, including brothers Dara and Tomás Cathcart, making their mark for Doherty’s side.

Kinawley have some tough, physical defenders in Achlinn O’Cathain and Liam Owens, while Patrick McGovern continues to be the rock at the heart of the defence.

They also have plenty of physicality around the middle through the Breen brothers, Ciaran and Paul, who will face a stern test against Devenish’s midfielders.

Kinawley boast a lively forward division featuring Sean McManus, Tom Keenan and the impressive Tiarnán McKenna, who has really caught fire during the championship.

However, their potential game-changer could be Ruairí Corrigan off the bench, with his ability to win possession and take scores offering a valuable weapon for Doherty’s side.

There is little to separate these sides, but Devenish’s experience and physicality could be enough to see them edge a tight contest.
