Grimsby Town turned on the style in the second half to hit York City for five at Blundell Park, with a 5-2 triumph securing consecutive victories.
The scores were locked at 2-2 at the break after a back-and-forth first period, with Andy Cook and Iwan Morgan scoring for the Mariners, but then goals from the returning Cameron McJannet, a first for Josh Andrews and a second in as many games for Geza David Turi took the game away from the visitors.
There was one change to the line-up that started the previous two matches, with Cameron McJannet returning from a short spell out with injury to come straight back in ahead of Justin Amaluzor.
David Artell did opt to stick with the back three shape that had brought some success for the team in the last two fixtures, though, with Joe Foulkes shifting out to right wing-back to make room for McJannet, and Charles Vernam playing on the left flank.
Alex Hunt started for the visitors in what was his first game back at Blundell Park, since leaving in the summer of 2024 for the Minstermen.
It was a lively start to the game with both sets of fans in full voice, with pot shots at both ends from Josh Stones for York and Charles Vernam for Town giving both teams an early sight of goal in the first two minutes.
Ollie Pearce had the first shot on target in the game from the left side of the box, which Christy Pym could not collect at the first attempt but swallowed up the loose ball before Harry Boyes could follow in.
Town’s first attempt on target produced the first goal, with a great move down the left seeing McJannet get into a crossing position and deliver an inch-perfect ball for Cook to head in.
Vernam was then able to get into a shooting position as Town looked to capitalise on their early momentum, but his shot cutting in from the left was straight at the goalkeeper.
York were able to recover quickly though, with Arthur Read having a shot deflected narrowly wide for a corner, which then produced the equaliser, with the delivery cleared only as far as Hunt, who fired a brilliant low shot into the bottom right corner of Pym’s net from the edge of the box.
The game was in the balance again 20 minutes in and Town looked to regain control quickly with Iwan Morgan heading narrowly wide from a Vernam whipped cross.
Harvey Rodgers was left face down on the turf by some nifty dribbling by Harry Boyes, who then fired a shot at Pym, who stopped well with his feet. York continued to push after that chance though, and Jack Hunt completed the turnaround as he received the ball on the right side of the box, cut in on his left foot and curled past Pym.
The visitors were ahead for barely three minutes as Morgan was alive on the rebound to mop up after Maldini Kacurri’s close-range shot had come off the inside of the post.
Kieran Green almost snuck in a sliding effort at the near post after McJannet brought down Foulkes’ diagonal and played the ball across, but the former redirected the ball just the wrong side of the post.
York were in control of possession to start the second period, and with Town sat in, Pierce almost broke through on goal from a through ball but was blocked by a great recovery challenge in the box from Foulkes.
Frankie Maguire was introduced just 10 minutes into the second half and had the best opening of the period soon after as he got in down the right side of the box, but his across-goal shot flashed past the post.
Jamie Walker then tested Alfie McNally with a pure strike as the ball was headed out to him from a Morgan long throw, but the York stopper did well to get down to his right and push away.
Sonny Finch capitalised on uncertainty at the back to get to a back pass before the goalkeeper, but fellow substitute Josh Andrews’s shot was blocked, and York managed to recover.
The two sides continued to trade blows in the second half, but Grimsby landed a third in the 75th minute as a short corner routine allowed Morgan to deliver right on the far post for Cameron McJannet to head in.
Town smelt blood then, and on the counter Geza David Turi was able to carry the ball to the edge of the box from halfway and then slide in Andrews, who tucked away his first Grimsby goal and his team’s fourth on the day.
The Mariners were not done there, though, as Turi turned scorer with a piledriver past McNally from the edge of the box to make it five, rounding off a perfect second half and back-to-back wins for Town.
