Former England manager Fabio Capello has reacted to Manchester United’s victory over Roma.

A spectacular 3-2 comeback win for Manchester United was a crushing loss for Roma, who had lost their two previous visits to Old Trafford. United had been 2-0 down at half-time.

It came not long after Roma allowed a 3-1 lead against Real Madrid slip, losing 4-3 after a late collapse.

Former Roma boss Capello believes the Manchester United loss is more painful, because it cannot be excused. He points to Real Madrid’s superior players as reason for that loss – but cannot say the same about the Red Devils.

Capello told TMW: “You have to ask yourself a question. They dominated the first half. Manchester United have average players, and this defeat stings much more than the one against Mourinho.”

He also had a message for United, urging the team to play with the same galvanised attitude for the forthcoming matches.

Manchester United win must be a catalyst

The crowd at Old Trafford celebrated wildly when Matheus Cunha’s late goal went in. It was the first time that United had won a match since early September.

A tricky upcoming fixture at home to Aston Villa follows this weekend, before the international break. And United then follow that up with an away game at Liverpool.

We could quite easily end up back at square one, if United follow this victory up with insipid, mistake-laded performances.

But this game did show what we hoped, heading into the season. There is talent in this United squad, despite the limitations. We also finally saw a bit of hunger and fight – just in time.
