Michael Carrick has given his response after hearing his Manchester United players get booed

Jose Mourinho once adopted a comical stance to being booed - and it's very different to Michael Carrick's approach. Carrick was the only person to receive a positive reception during Manchester United's dire 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth, a result that looks like it could result in his dismissal.

Carrick had positive chants aimed in his direction and was cheered by fans as he made his way off the Old Trafford pitch, probably for the final time. Meanwhile, derogatory chants were aimed at the Glazers, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and director of football Jason Wilcox during the game, while the players were booed at full-time.

Asked if he had spoken to the players about the jeers in the dressing room, Carrick said: "I've not spoken to everyone individually. The ones I have spoken to, it's affecting them a lot, as you can see really with the performance, how much it's not gone our way, and we've not made it go our way.

"There's only so much really, because just because of the way the game ended, the atmosphere in the stadium, the dynamics, and trying to almost spend some time trying to digest that and see what that means."

Needless to say, Carrick and Mourinho are very different characters, a fact summed up by the Portuguese coach's approach to boos during his first spell as Real Madrid boss.

Speaking ahead of a Madrid derby in 2012, Mourinho invited the supporters to boo him individually instead of his struggling players, even giving them a time to turn up and barrack him if they wished.

He said: "They applaud me and they whistle at me. That's life in football. I'll head out into the Bernabeu by myself at 9.20 pm. If they want to whistle at me, I'll be there.

"I'll take it calmly and humbly. All I want is for them to try to support and help the team. I want them to whistle at me at 9.20 pm, and then support the team."

Meanwhile, Carrick was appreciative of the support he received from fans, saying: "I have to say really mixed emotions. Probably didn't really expect that off the supporters, if I'm honest, but I've always felt the support and always felt that connection with them anyway.

"Probably sick of me saying all the time, of the amount of times I've sat here and said it, of the respect that I have for them and for them to kind of show that back meant an awful lot.

"But it's still to be in such a difficult situation and go through a day like we have done, in a spell like we have done, is certainly difficult to take. So there's real mixed emotions in there for sure."

Elsewhere on Sunday, Mourinho masterminded a crucial El Clasico win for Real Madrid over Barcelona after Kylian Mbappe's late strike sealed a 2-1 victory. Typically, the former United boss celebrated the goal with a kneeslide in the technical area.
