Crystal Palace have five managers to replace Pierre Sage as boss set to be sacked

Another defeat has left Pierre Sage in deep trouble at Crystal Palace.

Things went from bad to worse for Pierre Sage on Saturday. The Crystal Palace boss was already under pressure before kick-off against Tottenham and his job was made harder when his team went down to 10 men inside 15 minutes. Jean-Philippe Mateta saw red for a lunge on Micky van de Ven, with referee Michael Oliver upgrading his yellow card to a red after a VAR intervention. The 10 men then fell behind when Archie Gray headed home from a Spurs corner and there was no way back. Jan Paul van Hecke added another for the hosts in the second half to make sure of the result.

Sage earned seven points from the first six games, recovering after starting his first Premier League campaign with back-to-back defeats. However, this was a third loss on the spin and The Guardian reported earlier in the week that defeat at Spurs would see him dismissed. The Eagles have also blown hot and cold in Europe, losing to their manager's former employers Lyon. Things have hardly been easy for the Frenchman, with the squad depleted across the last three transfer windows with Ebere Eze, Marc Guehi, Maxence Lacroix and Daniel Munoz among those to go. The Conference League holders dropped into the bottom three before kick-off on Saturday and the ownership may feel a change is needed in the dugout.

Palace have acted early before and it's done the trick. They previously turned to Tony Pulis, Sam Allardyce and Roy Hodgson for some pre-Christmas firefighting work and we've looked at who they might want to bring in if Sage gets the chop.

Gareth Southgate

Former England boss Southgate has history with Palace. He began his playing career with the club, playing just shy of 200 matches before leaving for Aston Villa in 1995.

The 56-year-old hasn't rushed into anything new since leaving his international gig after Euro 2024. Palace might be one of the clubs who can tempt him back into the dugout but we don't know yet if he has any such plans.

Palace sporting director Matt Hobbs knows Edwards well from their time together at Wolves, where the latter held multiple roles before returning as manager last term. The 43-year-old left Molineux on the eve of the new season and remains unattached.

The former Luton boss recently appeared on The Managers podcast and indicated there had been interest from unnamed suitors. Reports of West Ham moving for him appear wide of the mark, though, despite Nuno Espirito Santo coming under pressure after successive league losses.

Eddie Howe

Former Newcastle boss Howe has been out of work since leaving St James' Park in the summer. Manchester United have been linked but, if they decide to keep Michael Carrick or look elsewhere, might Palace try their luck?

Howe has overseen a successful firefighting mission in the past, dragging the Magpies clear of danger in 2021/22. However, it's unlikely he'd have comparable resources at Selhurst Park - that's if he'd want the job at all.

Thomas Frank

Former Tottenham manager Frank was among those linked with Palace after Oliver Glasner's summer exit. Ultimately, though, the club decided Sage was their man.

Frank's tenure at Brentford showed Palace the blueprint for success on a budget and they may feel now is the time to take a chance. However, some might be put off by his struggles at Tottenham last season.

Yes, you read that right. Glasner has struggled at Nottingham Forest since his summer move to the City Ground, with his new side one of the only two teams below his old one on the table.

If Palace want to wait for Evangelos Marinakis to sack the Austrian - and you can't say he doesn't have previous for that kind of behaviour - might Glasner entertain a return. They say 'never go back' but stranger things have happened.
