Carolina Panthers supporters were left seething at quarterback Bryce Young after he was caught grinning on the sidelines following an interception during Thursday Night Football.
Young's pass was deflected at the line of scrimmage and intercepted, with Green Bay Packers signal-caller Jordan Love capitalizing on the turnover by connecting with Matthew Golden for a touchdown, further extending their lead.
Young had already been struggling against the Packers before the costly interception, but his apparent smile on the sidelines in the wake of the untimely turnover sent fans into a frenzy. This latest setback follows a humiliating defeat at the hands of Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who put up a staggering 43 points against the Panthers on Young's return from injury.
Taking to social media, one irate Panthers supporter wrote, "Bryce smiling coming to the sideline after throwing the int. Be p-----, have some fight."
Another fumed, "Bryce Young got intercepted and he's SMILING?! ," while a third fan warned, "Bryce you better quit smiling. Aint nothing to smile about."
Young's first-half display was nothing short of dismal, completing just 9-of-17 passes for 61 yards, with no touchdowns, one interception, and two sacks.
This follows an equally troubling outing against the Buccaneers last weekend, where Young threw for 167 yards, one touchdown, two interceptions, and was sacked a staggering five times. The Panthers face a challenging schedule ahead, needing victories to stay competitive in their division as the Buccaneers regain momentum and the Atlanta Falcons trail by just one game.
Young is now eligible for a contract extension, with reports indicating he could command elite-level compensation - a prospect the Panthers may hesitate to offer given his ongoing struggles.
Although Young has recorded 12 touchdowns against five interceptions this season, his completion percentage sits below 60% - placing him 29th in the league, among the bottom four quarterbacks.
As one of the shortest quarterbacks in NFL history, Young has faced challenges with deflected passes at the line of scrimmage and has found it difficult to deliver throws over the middle due to his stature.
These issues are expected to factor heavily into contract discussions and could potentially cost him millions as he seeks to negotiate a substantial extension with the Panthers.
