Man Utd: "The best English coach by a million miles" leading contender to replace Carrick

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick remains under significant pressure ahead of Saturday's Premier League clash with Chelsea, with the club reportedly considering several potential replacements.

Heavy defeats to Como and Bournemouth have left Carrick fighting to save his job at Old Trafford.

However, United have opted against making an immediate managerial change, with the former midfielder set to lead his side at Stamford Bridge this weekend.

A positive result against Chelsea may earn Carrick more time, with fixtures against Roma and Aston Villa to follow before the November international break, which would present a natural opportunity for the club's hierarchy to reassess his position.

Speaking ahead of the Chelsea encounter, Carrick insisted that he is ignoring speculation surrounding his future.

"I don't see it really. I see the things that I need to see. I don't look for it. It doesn't really help in any way.

"I've said it before, I care about what the supporters think, I care about what it feels like in the stadium and them travelling for games to us to come and see us and support us. I care about what we give them and what we offer them and what they see. I genuinely don't take any notice of anything else."

The first thing on the agenda is to resolve the situation around captain Bruno Fernandes, having left him out of his side against the Cherries following the Portugal star's criticism of the tactics at Como.

"Yeah, it was a decision, as I said, for what we felt for the game. That's it," the manager said during his pre-match press conference.

"Bruno's fully committed to this football club and there are absolutely no issues with that. We move forward, we make decisions as we go and we're looking forward to the game on Saturday now."

Carrick also acknowledged the frustration within his squad after Lisandro Martinez also lashed out publicly recently, although he believes his players remain determined to turn their fortunes around.

"The boys, I have to say, they're hungry, we're hurting because we haven't won enough football games, but there's an intensity, there's a bit of an edge, there's a disappointment, there's a hunger to do better, for sure."

Eddie Howe emerges as leading Man Utd candidate as two alternatives face obstacles

While Carrick remains in charge for now, United are still weighing up their options should results fail to improve over the next three games, according to GIVEMESPORT senior football correspondent Ben Jacobs.

"Michael Carrick remains under pressure," he explained.

"He's got Stamford Bridge and Chelsea. If he can get a positive result there, the expectation is that he'll get Roma and Aston Villa, and then there's an international break."

Several high-profile managers have been discussed as potential successors, including Eddie Howe, Julian Nagelsmann, Antonio Conte, Cesc Fabregas, Unai Emery and Fabian Hurzeler.

However, Jacobs' latest information suggests that two of those candidates would be particularly difficult to appoint.

"My information is that Hurzeler won't leave Brighton mid-season, and it'll be really difficult to get Emery away from Aston Villa, because even though Manchester United is a big club, he's done amazing work at Villa, and he has a massive amount of control.

"Manchester United is a different and more collaborative project, and Unai Emery might well need some convincing, and even if he wanted the role, you've got to negotiate compensation with Aston Villa as well.

"But from the free agents, it seems like a leading contender is Eddie Howe, who would be open to the role if a change is made, but for now, Manchester United are backing Michael Carrick."

Howe would reportedly require compensation of around £3m to be paid to Newcastle United, which represents a relatively affordable route compared to negotiating the release of Emery or Hurzeler, while his extensive Premier League experience also puts him ahead of the likes of Nagelsmann and Fabregas.

The Englishman's reputation has previously earned him significant praise from Jamie Carragher, who described Howe in glowing terms when discussing his suitability for the England job.

"I've championed Eddie Howe as the next England manager, I think he's a wonderful coach, the best English coach by a million miles, I love him to bits."

For now, Carrick has an opportunity to strengthen his position against Chelsea, but another disappointing result would only intensify questions about his future, with the November international break fast approaching and the potential future England manager waiting in the wings.
