Spain's Technical Committee of Referees (CTA) acknowledged on Wednesday that VAR should have intervened for a clear and obvious error when referee José Luis Munuera awarded a penalty for Matteo Prati's challenge on Kylian Mbappe, which led to Real Madrid's opening goal against Racing.
Reviewing the 10th-minute incident on their 'Tiempo de Revisión' programme, the CTA broke down the sequence leading up to the spot-kick, noting that Mbappé "controls the ball inside the penalty area and looks to drive past" before Prati "puts his arm out in front without exerting any force".
"A clear absence of cause and effect. An obvious error by the referee; VAR should have intervened," the CTA concluded regarding the encounter between Racing Club and Real Madrid, which finished 0-3.
