Meet American chess prodigy Josh Waitzkin who began playing at the age of 6 and became International Master by 16

The love and passion for the game of chess took Josh Waitzkin places. His journey in the board game is not something seen or heard of too often. The seeds of his stellar success in chess were sown at the tender age of six.

Waitzkin’s obsession with the game grew exponentially after he saw people playing in Washington Square Park in New York City. According to Chess.com, Waitzkin gives credit to the chess hustlers in the park who were apparently also his first teachers. From there he learned the aggressive style of playing the game. He held on to this style throughout his playing career.

At the age of seven, Waitzkin caught the eye of legendary chess trainer NM Bruce Pandolfini, who took him under his wing, according to Waitzkin’s website and Chess.com. He received two years of formal training, which did him a world of good.

How Waitzkin took the world of chess by storm

Waitzkin never looked back and continued to take giant strides in the world of chess. After sharpening his skills with two years of training, he began his reign of domination at the age of nine by winning multiple championships

According to his website, he won the National Primary Championship in 1986, the National Junior High Championship in 1988, when he was in fifth grade, and the National Elementary Championship in 1989.

More glory came his way as he kept growing from strength to strength. Waitzkin won the national master title when he was only 13. In 1990, he again won the National Junior High Championship and the National High School Championship a year later.

Waitzkin did not have to wait much longer for his international master title. It came at the age of 16. That’s not it. He also went on to become the co-champion of the U.S. Junior Chess Championship in the same year. His championship cabinet kept growing with the passage of time. In the following year, Waitzkin won the U.S. Junior Championship and earned fourth place at the Under-18 World Championship.

Why did Waitzkin step away from Chess

Everything was going well and on track, but in the year 2000, Waitzkin bid farewell to his chess career. He played his last rated tournament that year after apparently losing his love for the game.

According to Chess.com, Waitzkin attributed his decision to quit chess to outside pressure. His coaches also apparently insisted he keep aside his natural aggressive playing style.

Book and movie on Waitzkin’s chess legacy

The legacy Waitzkin left behind was captured in the book published by his father " Searching for Bobby Fischer ." His exceptional achievements in the board game also found its way to the big screen with the 1993 movie "Searching for Bobby Fischer" based on the book. It was released under the banner of Paramount Pictures.
