Rueben Bain has his best showing against Falcons

Rueben Bain Jr. didn't need a sack to make his presence felt against the Atlanta Falcons. In fact, the conditions at Raymond James Stadium made it difficult for Tampa Bay's pass rush to get going. With rain pouring throughout Sunday's 16-0 shutout, the Buccaneers' pass rush had fewer opportunities than usual. But Bain still found a way to influence the game, and his pressure on Michael Penix Jr. helped create opportunities for Tampa Bay's secondary to capitalize.

The weather dictated almost everything. Baker Mayfield finished with no completions on three attempts, while Atlanta quarterback Michael Penix Jr. struggled to find consistency through the air. The Falcons had to navigate slippery football, wet conditions, and a Tampa Bay defense that kept making life difficult in the pocket. For Bain, that meant finding ways to make an impact without the benefit of a traditional pass-rushing game script. Tampa Bay didn't consistently put opponents in obvious passing situations, and the lack of clean opportunities limited what the rookie could do as a pure edge rusher. Still, his ability to generate pressure when those opportunities presented themselves proved important.

The impact was particularly clear on the interception opportunities. Bain's pressure helped force Penix into difficult decisions, contributing to two of Tampa Bay's four interceptions. One of those plays came on a fourth-down attempt when Bain pressured Penix into throwing a pass Jacob Parrish was waiting to intercept. Bain also led Tampa Bay's outside linebacker rotation, playing 66% of the defensive snaps. That became even more important after Yaya Diaby left with a knee injury in the first half. Rather than disappear into the rotation, Bain took on the added responsibility and kept making his presence felt. This performance is encouraging for Bain's development: the first-round pick entered the season with high expectations, but injuries and a slow start to his rookie campaign made it hard to establish consistency. But against Atlanta, he continued building on the progress he has slowly made, having his most dominant performance. Tampa Bay held Atlanta to 125 passing yards, forced four interceptions, and prevented the Falcons from converting a single third down in 12 attempts. Bain deserves credit for helping make that happen. His development matters to a defense that needs a consistent edge presence, especially as the competition gets tougher. The weather limited opportunities to showcase his pass-rushing ability, but he still found ways to impact the game.
