Man Utd academy prospects 2026: JJ Gabriel, Shea Lacey and who is closest to the first team
Man Utd academy prospects 2026: JJ Gabriel, Shea Lacey and who is closest to the first team

Manchester United academy player Shea Lacey scored just a few minutes into his first senior competitive start for the Red Devils.

Man Utd manager Michael Carrick named the 19-year-old in his starting line-up for their Carabao Cup defeat by Brighton & Hove Albion in September 2026.

Liverpool-born Lacey made his fourth Premier League appearance off the bench before the first international break of the 2026-27 season. Every indication is that he will soon add to a long and rich history of Man Utd youth players representing the club at first-team level.

On the basis of competitive appearances, age-group level and the positional requirements facing Carrick this season, and with JJ Gabriel reportedly making it clear that he intends to leave, Lacey is the likeliest Man Utd youngster to make the grade first.

But how do the other Man Utd academy players rank in terms of their first-team prospects?

Who is the closest to the Manchester United first team?

15-year-old JJ Gabriel is one of the top Man Utd wonderkids but his hat-trick against Sabah in the UEFA Youth League in August 2026 was followed by a bombshell request to leave Old Trafford.

Winger Lacey is has featured under Carrick this season, while Tyler Fletcher and Jack Fletcher – the sons of former United midfielder and caretaker head coach Darren Fletcher – are yet to add to their 2025-26 involvement.

1. Shea Lacey

Already has his first competitive start, first senior goal and substitute appearances in the Premier League.

2. Tyler Fletcher

Has been an unused substitute in the Champions League and Carabao Cup this season, following involvement with the senior side last season. Has also been capped twice by Scotland.

3. Jack Fletcher

Captain of Manchester United's Premier League 2 team. Has yet to feature for the first team in 2026/27 after making a handful of appearances in 2025/26.

4. Bendito Mantato

Has already made his competitive debut for Manchester United. A versatile starter for the Premier League 2 team who has also featured in the UEFA Youth League.

5. JJ Gabriel

An exceptional academy prospect who has yet to make his competitive first-team debut and reportedly wants to leave the club.

Man Utd academy prospects to know in 2026

There are eight Man Utd youth players to keep an eye on in 2026-27.

Lacey is already in the mix for Carrick and the Fletcher brothers appear to be pushing for further involvement after cameos in 2025-26, while Bendito Mantato, Jaydan Kamason, Godwill Kukonki and Jim Thwaites have all been making a noise at youth level.

Shea Lacey

The closest Man Utd youngster to more regular first-team appearances, Lacey is a 19-year-old Liverpudlian who played his academy football with the Red Devils and signed professional terms in 2024.

He made his first competitive senior start against Brighton in the third round of the Carabao Cup in September 2026, scoring seven minutes into a game that ended in a 3-2 loss for Carrick's team.

The England Under-20 international played three times as a substitute in the Premier League last season including a 30-minute appearance against the Seagulls in the last game of the campaign, months after a Premier League debut against Aston Villa in a defeat in December 2025.

In January 2026, he made his first FA Cup appearance – again against Brighton – and was sent off in a 2-1 loss at Old Trafford.

Lacey played in the first Premier League match of 2026-27 but was an unused substitute in three of the next four before the September and October international break, though he did make his Champions League debut in the league phase opener against Sabah.

"He does all the right things. He wants to do well, wants to learn. He’s waited for his chance," Carrick said of Lacey after his Carabao Cup appearance.

"He’s been ready. He’s given himself all the chances to take his opportunity when it’s come along, and they’re the moments that, as an academy, you kind of live for, and the reason why all the work goes into it: to find those moments."

Tyler Fletcher

Midfielder Tyler Fletcher has a growing reputation but no shortage of competition for minutes in middle of the pitch at senior level.

In the summer transfer window, United added Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans to a midfield group that already boasted captain Bruno Fernandes and former Man Utd academy player Kobbie Mainoo, among others.

Fletcher switched from Manchester City's academy three years ago and the 19-year-old made his Premier League debut when Carrick brought him on as a very late substitute against Tottenham Hotspur in February 2026. He played again in the final league fixture of that season but is yet to make a third top-flight appearance.

Described as 'outstanding' by his Under-21 manager, Fletcher was called up for Scotland's World Cup squad after Billy Gilmour was ruled out through injury. He has played twice for his country.

Jack Fletcher

Jack Fletcher, Tyler's twin, faces exactly the same competition for places.

He made his Premier League debut before his brother, appearing as a substitute in the same Villa fixture as Lacey at the end of 2025.

Fletcher played in the next two matches but has yet to make a league appearance under Carrick and has been limited to PL2 and UEFA Youth League football in 2026-27.

The 19-year-old is the captain of Adam Lawrence's team but has arguably seen his progress dented slightly by a six-match ban for making a homophobic comment towards an opponent in an EFL Trophy fixture last term.

Bendito Mantato

Manchester-born Bendito Mantato is not currently listed in Man Utd's first team squad despite making his debut for the first team in 2025-26.

The 18-year-old wide player, who can play in an attacking role or as a wing-back or full-back primarily on the right, featured as a substitute in the Red Devils' draw with relegation-bound Wolverhampton Wanderers in December 2025.

He featured heavily in under-age competitions that season. In 2026-27, Mantato has played twice in PL2 and once, against Sabah, in the UEFA Youth League.

The Man Utd youngster, blessed with technical ability and blistering raw pace, has been considered one of the club's most exciting prospects since catching the eye of former first team head coach Ruben Amorim in 2024.

JJ Gabriel

Gabriel appeared destined for a first-team breakthrough and was reportedly in line to become United's youngest-ever player in their Carabao Cup clash against Brighton.

However, just days after his hat-trick against Sabah, Gabriel and his family formally requested that United cancel his academy registration.

United rejected the request and have made several attempts to repair the relationship, but Gabriel has not trained with the club since informing them of his desire to leave.

His inclusion in United's official 2026/27 team photograph, released in October, briefly raised questions over his future. However, the picture was taken on September 8, before the breakdown in relations.

According to Sky Sports, Gabriel's family had sought assurances over first-team opportunities, with a difference of opinion emerging over how quickly he should be integrated into the senior side.

Gabriel turned 16 on October 6, potentially opening the door to a move abroad, subject to the relevant transfer regulations and approval.

Real Madrid, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich are all monitoring his situation, with a move to another European club now considered increasingly likely.

Despite his exceptional talent and previous involvement with United's senior squad, Gabriel appears further away from making his competitive first-team debut than ever.

Jaydan Kamason

Defender Jaydan Kamason was the first player from United's Emerging Talent Programme (ETP) to sign a professional contract at Old Trafford.

The former England Under-16 international right-back scored two goals in two PL2 matches before the first international break of 2026-27 but hasn't yet made a senior appearance.

In 2025-26, Kamason played 14 times in PL2 and twice in Travis Binnion's Under-21 side in the National League Cup against Brackley Town and Tamworth.

Kamason joined the ETP at the age of 10 and progressed through the programme only to spend a considerable amount of his time as a professional so far in the treatment room.

He says he's aiming to stay injury-free and show what he can do in 2026-27, describing himself as an ambitious player.

Godwill Kukonki

Godwill Kukonki, 18, has been a Man Utd academy player since 2013.

A left-footed defender who primarily plays at centre-back, the England Under-18 international has been an unused substitute for a number of first team fixtures but is yet to make his senior debut.

Kukonki played extensively in PL2 and the Under-18 Premier League in 2025-26, and has remained at that level since Carrick's arrival.

This season, the young defender has played three times in PL2 and the UEFA Youth League, ending each match on the winning team.

Jim Thwaites

Born in the Lake District and now an established Man Utd academy prospect, Jim Thwaites is another central midfield player looking to make his mark as he pushes towards his 19th birthday.

Thwaites, who has been praised for his skillset as a midfield all-rounder who can dictate the play as well as having an impact in attacking areas, has been around the first team over the last couple of years but is still waiting for a senior debut.

He played mostly in the Under-18 Premier League in 2025-26, scoring five goals in 17 appearances, but also contributed to the PL2 team.

In 2026-27, Thwaites played three PL2 games and once in the UEFA Youth League before the first international break, assisting two of United's five goals against Sabah.

What is happening with JJ Gabriel at Man Utd?

Highly-rated forward Gabriel shocked United fans when it was reported that he wanted to leave the club, but no move has yet been confirmed.

Interest from Barcelona was cited in September but was flatly denied by Barca sporting director Deco.

Gabriel is understood to have attracted interest from back-to-back Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain as well as Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, but bottom line is that he is, for now, a Man United player. His registration has not been cancelled.

JJ Gabriel

According to SPORT, Gabriel will not sign a contract at Old Trafford and wants to move to Spain, with Real Madrid now the leading candidates to snag the striker: "The young soccer player understands that the Spanish League is optimal to develop his qualities to the maximum and that the two great representatives of LaLiga are an ideal platform to grow and consolidate in the elite in the not too distant future."

Gabriel has played in the academy with Kai Rooney, whose father, Wayne, is a legendary figure at United. The former England striker indicated on the Stick To Football podcast in September 2026 that nobody close to the situation will have been surprised that Gabriel, a 'top player', would push to leave the club.

The 15-year-old has not appeared in a United shirt since his hat-trick against Sabah on September 10.

How we ranked Manchester United's academy prospects

Our ranking of Man Utd academy prospect is based on the progress to date of players who are under the age of 21 and have not yet emerged as established members of Carrick's first team.

We've taken into account what's been said about the players by their managers at Under-18 and Under-21 level, and, where relevant, what Carrick himself has put on record as United's head coach.

Gabriel's situation has dropped him down the rankings, though his age is also a factor. He is perhaps the best example of long-term potential and first-team proximity being misaligned so early in players' careers.

Involvement with the first team is a positive indicator for the Fletcher brothers, who are continuing to progress this season but would have to overhaul four or five players to clock up another Premier League appearance. Later in the season, when rotation could become more important, both could get another opportunity to impress in the right circumstances.

United's early elimination from the Carabao Cup is to the detriment of all of these players, some of whom already serve as proof that the minutes would have been there had the Red Devils stayed in the competition.

First-team activity this season is still a big tick in the Lacey box. If United can lock down a place in the knock-out phase of the Champions League with room to spare, we'd back him to get his moment again.
