Immanuel Feyi-Waboso stood down with immediate effect

Immanuel Feyi-Waboso will miss Exeter Chiefs’ match this weekend as he continues his recovery from a hamstring injury.

The England winger was expected to return after picking up the problem against Newcastle Red Bulls at the start of the month.

However, with the Nations Championship approaching, a cautious approach has been taken to avoid risking further damage.

Feyi-Waboso also missed Exeter’s defeat to Toulouse last weekend, as he continued his rehabilitation. His absence has now extended beyond the initial expectations surrounding his recovery.

There is understandable caution given the injury’s history.

The 23-year-old missed this year’s Six Nations after suffering a hamstring problem in January, and another setback could keep him out for a significant period.

With Feyi-Waboso holding an England EPS contract, the national team has a say in his medical management. England have opted to give him additional time to recover fully ahead of the autumn internationals.

The winger has become a key figure for Steve Borthwick’s side, starting all three of England’s Nations Championship matches over the summer. He also crossed the try line against both Fiji and Argentina.

At club level, Feyi-Waboso started Exeter’s opening three PREM Rugby fixtures before suffering the injury against Newcastle. He made a strong start to the campaign, scoring twice against Bath.

Widely regarded as one of the most exciting young talents in rugby union, he combines outstanding athleticism with the technical ability and decision-making needed to make an impact at the highest level.

England face Australia, Japan and New Zealand before the Nations Championship finals weekend at Allianz Stadium. Borthwick’s side will hope to reach the final as the highest-ranked team from the Northern Hemisphere.

Exeter director of rugby Rob Baxter has offered an encouraging update on Feyi-Waboso’s progress, although he confirmed the winger would not be available this weekend.

“It’s pretty good; he was running quite quickly,” Baxter said of Feyi-Waboso, according to Planet Rugby. “We’re pleased with his progress, but England are a bit more safety-first about it.

“England physios are down here on a regular basis working alongside our head physio.

"He’s progressing along, he’s running around pretty well and he’s run at decent speed; but he’s going to have a re-scan at the weekend to help make the next decision for where things go next week. He won’t be available for this weekend, though.”
