2-time All-Star Bo Bichette reportedly opting in for $42M to return to Mets in 2027

Bo Bichette is ready to run it back with the New York Mets.

The two-time All-Star infielder intends to exercise a $42 million player option to return to the Mets for the 2027 season, The Athletic reports.

Bichette joined the Mets last offseason as one of the prized free agents in his class after seven standout seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays. He signed a three-year $126 million contract with player options for 2027 and 2028.

When he joined the Mets, they were eyeing contention for a World Series title in 2026. The Mets instead were arguably the biggest disappointment in baseball with a 74-88 record and last-place finish in the NL East.

Bichette, 28, got off to a slow start in his first season with New York, but rallied to finish with a .260/.312/.390 slash line with 18 home runs and 78 RBI. The full-season production was below the All-Star standard he set with the Blue Jays, but he flashed his former All-Star form late in the season.

With the threat of a lockout looming while coming off a relatively down season, Bichette opted for the security of a $42 million deal rather than risk going into a work stoppage without a contract. He maintains his player option for 2028 and could command more value on a longer deal next offseason if he returns to his All-Star form.

The Mets, meanwhile, are hoping Bichette can contribute to a turnaround in 2027 when and if baseball is actually played.
