No 10 answers Harry Kane knighthood question after Ballon d'Or win

The England and Bayern Munich striker received football’s top individual men’s award at a ceremony at the London Palladium on Monday night.

The honour followed Kane’s 73-goal haul for club and country last season. He became the fifth English player to win the prize, following Stanley Matthews, Bobby Charlton, Kevin Keegan and Michael Owen.

Owen was the last England player to receive the award, in 2001.

Kane’s success has led to renewed questions about whether he should receive a knighthood.

Liberal Democrat MP Layla Moran submitted an early day motion titled “Potential merits of a knighthood for Harry Kane” in July.

The Oxford West and Abingdon MP said Kane had shown “inspirational leadership on and off the pitch” after he scored twice as England beat the Democratic Republic of Congo at the FIFA World Cup in July.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham offered his congratulations.

A No 10 spokeswoman said: “The PM would like to congratulate Harry Kane on winning the Ballon d’Or.

“To be the first Englishman to win it in 25 years is an extraordinary achievement, and what a moment to do it here at home.

The spokeswoman added: "The PM knows the whole nation will be incredibly proud of him.

“And, hopefully, there’s another trophy to celebrate with England before too long.”

Asked whether the Prime Minister wanted Kane to be knighted, the spokeswoman said: “On your question about a knighthood, I think everyone would agree, Harry Kane has given an enormous amount to English football, and this is a very special moment for him and the country, but, as ever, I’m not going to pre-empt the honours process.”
