Bournemouth boss Marco Rose admitted he felt for Michael Carrick as he moved closer to being sacked by Manchester United on Sunday afternoon.

United were beaten 3-0 by Bournemouth at Old Trafford, their second heavy defeat of the week, and Carrick looked emotional after full-time as he applauded supporters before disappearing down the tunnel.

The Reds have taken just seven points from eight Premier League games this season, pushing Carrick towards the exit door.

Bournemouth manager Rose was asked about Carrick's situation during his post-match press conference, and he said: "I feel a lot of empathy for my colleagues, for everyone. Everyone has to understand that even we are just humans, and we try to do our job the best possible way.

"But if a game starts, the work is done, then it's up to the lads, and then sometimes it's about the momentum, sometimes it's about a little bit of luck. At the end, it's never easy for us again, and I feel with Michael, yes."

Rose also explained he did not talk to his team about starting well to get the Old Trafford crowd to turn on their team. "No, it was never talked about the fans and United, it was always about us," he said.

"We knew United like we did after the Chelsea game try to show a reaction and we have to try and be ready and we were. We want to be front-footed and brave. We have good players and we showed it. We were just Bournemouth today."

Carrick was asked about his situation by Sky Sports, to which he responded: "It wasn't a farewell from me (waving to the fans at full-time). I'm mixed emotions, I'm feeling it for my players, they're going through a tough spell.

"Some of it we can help, some of it the situation unravels and the boys are feeling it at the moment. Mixed emotions for the supporters to respond in that way.

"To have that connection with the supporters, it's mixed emotions, it'll take a bit of time to digest but I certainly appreciate their support. The situation is where we are and we haven't had results or performances that have been good enough.

"It's a tough situation, there's no hiding from it. What it looks like and what's next I really don't know. I will always do my best for the football club and I won't change that now. I love what I do and I feel the responsibility - we'll have to wait and see."
