Celtic Star Catches Chris Sutton’s Eye – But There’s a Twist
Celtic Star Catches Chris Sutton’s Eye – But There’s a Twist

Chris Sutton has praised the attacking threat of Haissem Hassan, but his latest observation gives Martin O’Neill something to consider.

Celtic’s emphatic 7-1 demolition of Hearts provided supporters with plenty to celebrate, but one player’s performance particularly caught the attention of former Hoops striker Chris Sutton.

Haissem Hassan was a constant attacking threat, showing the confidence, pace and willingness to take on defenders that Celtic supporters have been desperate to see.

However, Sutton noticed something else about the winger.

And it’s an observation worth considering ahead of Thursday’s Europa League encounter with Celta Vigo.

Sutton Impressed but Spots Room for Improvement

Speaking on Sky Sports, Sutton acknowledged Hassan’s attacking qualities while raising questions about his defensive contribution.

“He doesn’t want to work back defensively and that’s the issue with him.”

It’s an interesting assessment, particularly after such a convincing Celtic victory.

Personally, I think Hassan has brought something refreshing to this Celtic side.

He’s direct, unpredictable and prepared to take risks.

Too often, we’ve watched Celtic players choose the safe pass rather than attack the opposition.

Hassan offers something different.

And that’s exactly why I believe Martin O’Neill should continue giving him opportunities.

Donovan and Hassan Could Become a Formidable Partnership

One of the most encouraging developments recently has been the improvement of young Colby Donovan.

The right-back is growing in confidence with every appearance, and his understanding with the players ahead of him will only improve through regular football.

However, Sutton’s observation raises an important question.

Can Hassan provide enough defensive support when Donovan ventures forward?

Against Hearts, Celtic’s attacking dominance allowed them to dictate proceedings.

European opposition could present a different challenge.

But that doesn’t mean restricting Hassan’s attacking instincts.

It means finding the right balance.

O’Neill Has an Exciting Player to Develop

Martin O’Neill has already acknowledged that Hassan’s defensive work requires attention.

That shouldn’t overshadow the positives.

Hassan possesses the sort of attacking ability that can change matches, and those players aren’t always easy to find.

The challenge now is to develop his all-round game without removing the qualities that make him dangerous.

I’d much rather see Celtic nurture an exciting attacking talent than turn him into another cautious, predictable winger.

Sutton has identified an area for improvement, but there’s a bigger picture here.

Celtic have a player capable of becoming a genuine match-winner.

And with the right coaching, Hassan could become even more valuable to Martin O’Neill’s side.
