USA TODAY Sports Network Week 10 HBCU football rankings

The HBCU football landscape continues to take shape as the regular season enters its final stretch, with conference races heating up and teams jockeying for position ahead of postseason play.

This week's Division I HBCU Top 21 features movement following a pivotal weekend of action, highlighted by Alabama A&M's Magic City Classic victory over Alabama State, Arkansas-Pine Bluff's offensive explosion against Bethune-Cookman and South Carolina State's dominant performance against Morgan State.

USA Today ranked all 21 Division I HBCU football teams and where they stand in the 2026 season. Here’s a look heading into Week 10.

1. South Carolina State (7-2, 2-0)

The Bulldogs remain the standard in the MEAC. Their 51-10 win over Morgan State was a dominant statement, and they have positioned themselves well for another conference championship appearance.

2. Alabama A&M (7-2, 4-1)

The Bulldogs strengthened their case as one of the nation's best HBCU programs with a 31-28 Magic City Classic victory over Alabama State. They're riding a three-game winning streak and leading the SWAC East.

3. Jackson State (6-2, 3-2)

Jackson State remains one of the SWAC's most talented teams. The Tigers were idle this past weekend, but their overall résumé keeps them among the top three. They need a strong finish to challenge Alabama A&M in the East.

4. Alcorn State (5-4, 3-2)

Alcorn continues to hang around the Western Division race. The Braves defeated Mississippi Valley State 52-17 and have shown the ability to produce explosive offensive performances.

5. Prairie View A&M (4-5, 3-2)

Prairie View was idle this weekend. The Panthers have work to do after a difficult stretch, but they're still in the thick of the SWAC West race.

6. North Carolina Central (4-5, 2-0)

The Eagles have struggled outside conference play, but they're undefeated in the MEAC. Their 34-0 shutout of Howard gives them momentum and makes them a legitimate conference contender.

7. Arkansas-Pine Bluff (5-3, 3-2)

UAPB delivered one of the weekend's biggest performances, routing Bethune-Cookman 63-21. The Golden Lions have won two straight and are making a serious push in the SWAC West.

8. Delaware State (5-4, 1-1)

The Hornets earned a hard-fought 36-33 victory over Norfolk State. They're still in the MEAC race, with an opportunity to build momentum during the final stretch.

9. Alabama State (4-4, 2-3)

The Hornets lost the Magic City Classic 31-28, but they were competitive against Alabama A&M. At .500 overall, Alabama State needs to win consistently down the stretch to stay relevant in the SWAC East race.

10. Bethune-Cookman (5-4, 3-2)

The Wildcats suffered a difficult 63-21 loss to UAPB. That defensive performance raises questions, but their 5-4 record and position in the SWAC East keep them in the top 10.

11. Texas Southern (3-5, 2-3)

Texas Southern earned one of its most important wins of the season, defeating Grambling State 23-20 in overtime. The Tigers have now won two straight. Their recent improvement makes them an interesting team to watch.

12. Grambling State (4-4, 2-3)

Grambling suffered a disappointing 23-20 overtime loss to Texas Southern. The Tigers have been inconsistent offensively and need to find a way to finish games. Their overall record keeps them in the middle of the rankings.

13. Southern (4-5, 2-3)

Southern picked up an important 42-14 win over Florida A&M. The Jaguars have shown flashes of being competitive, but consistency remains the biggest question. This win could provide some momentum heading into November.

14. Morgan State (5-4, 0-2)

Morgan State has a winning overall record but has struggled against MEAC competition. The Bears were thoroughly outmatched in their 51-10 loss to South Carolina State. They need to improve defensively to remain competitive.

15. North Carolina A&T (4-5, 3-2)

The Aggies picked up an important 13-10 victory over Elon. They're beginning to show improvement in conference play, and their three CAA victories give them a respectable résumé despite their losing overall record.

16. Howard (3-5, 2-2)

Howard had a weekend to forget, getting shut out 34-0 by North Carolina Central. The Bison have struggled to find offensive consistency, and they'll need a response in their remaining conference games.

17. Norfolk State (4-5, 0-2)

Norfolk State dropped a competitive 36-33 game to Delaware State. The Spartans have been unable to get their conference season moving in the right direction. Their remaining schedule will be important for evaluating their progress.

18. Mississippi Valley State (3-6, 2-3)

The Delta Devils suffered a 52-17 loss to Alcorn State. They've had trouble defensively, particularly against teams capable of creating explosive plays. Their three overall victories still represent progress, but there's plenty of room for improvement.

19. Florida A&M (2-7, 1-4)

Florida A&M continues to struggle through a difficult season. The Rattlers lost 42-14 to Southern, extending their losing streak to three games. Their offense needs to find more consistency if they're going to finish the season on a positive note.

20. Tennessee State (2-7, 0-4)

Tennessee State suffered a 27-0 shutout loss to Lindenwood. The Tigers have struggled throughout conference play and have lost four straight. Their offensive production is a major concern.

21. Hampton (1-8, 0-5)

Hampton has endured a difficult season, most recently falling 44-13 to Towson. The Pirates have struggled to compete consistently in the CAA and are looking to find something positive during the final stretch.
