New Zealand all-rounder Glenn Phillips broke the record for the most runs by a batter in a T20I series against India with a stunning century in the fourth match at Eden Park, Auckland, on Friday, October 30. The right-handed batter surpassed West Indies batter Shai Hope to claim the top spot in the elite list.

Phillips helped the hosts post their highest-ever T20I total of 259/7 after being asked to bat first. He smashed 107 off just 49 balls, including six fours and 10 sixes. However, India had already secured an unassailable 3-0 lead in the series, winning all three opening matches through successful run chases.

Glenn Phillips Surpasses Shai Hope's Record with 276 Runs in T20I Series

Glenn Phillips entered the fourth T20I needing 93 runs to surpass Shai Hope's record. Hope scored 261 runs against India in a five-match series earlier in October 2026. Phillips reached the milestone with his 45th delivery and finished with 276 runs. England's Harry Brook is third on the list with 229 runs in a series against India.

However, Phillips is still short of New Zealand's overall record for most runs in a T20I series, with Mark Chapman holding the mark of 290 runs against Pakistan in 2023.

Most runs in a T20I series against India:

  1. Glenn Phillips (New Zealand) – 276 runs (2026)

  2. Shai Hope (West Indies) – 261 runs (2026)

  3. Harry Brook (England) – 229 runs (2026)

Phillips also matched David Miller's record for the second-fastest T20I century against India, reaching his hundred in 46 balls. Jacob Bethell and Hope hold the record with 45-ball centuries.

Glenn Phillips and Michael Bracewell Add 115 Runs in 40 Balls

New Zealand lost Tim Seifert for three in the opening over to Mayank Yadav. Daryl Mitchell then scored 24 off nine balls before becoming Mayank's second victim. Finn Allen made 31 off 17 balls before Axar Patel dismissed him, while Bevon Jacobs scored seven off seven balls before Mayank claimed his third wicket.

With New Zealand reduced to 93/4, Glenn Phillips and Michael Bracewell launched a counterattack. The pair added 115 runs off just 40 deliveries for the fifth wicket. It was the fastest century partnership against India and the fourth-fastest 100-plus stand against a Full Member nation.

Bracewell smashed 65 off 25 balls, his highest T20I score, with four boundaries and six sixes before Prince Yadav ended his innings. Phillips continued his attack and eventually fell to Nitish Kumar Reddy in the final over after scoring 107 off 49 balls.

Glenn Phillips' Back-to-Back Half-Centuries Set Up Record-Breaking Series

Before his record-breaking century, Glenn Phillips scored an unbeaten 82 off 40 balls in the opening T20I, hitting six fours and six sixes. In the second match, he scored 70 off 43 after an early top-order collapse. His only low score came in the third T20I in Wellington, where he managed three off six balls.

Speaking during the mid-innings break, Michael Bracewell said: "It was great to be out there with GP, playing with him in front of this amazing crowd. It's pretty cool to play in a sold-out Eden Park. And, to be able to contribute to the total is pretty exciting."

Bracewell also praised his batting partner, saying: "It's amazing, yeah. He's a real character and entertainer and when he's batting like that, it's a privilege to watch from the other end. I think we bounced off each other really nicely and we were able to put the bowlers under a bit of pressure."
