Max Verstappen has made it crystal clear that his sights are firmly set on securing third place in the Constructors’ Championship for Red Bull, dismissing any concern over finishing runner-up in this year’s Drivers’ Championship. The reigning four-time world champion, currently fourth in the Drivers’ standings, trails George Russell by just six points but insists that individual glory takes a backseat to the team’s collective success.
Red Bull recently surged past McLaren to claim third in the Constructors’ tally following the United States Grand Prix in Austin. Both teams are deadlocked on 355 points and share two victories apiece, but Red Bull’s advantage comes from four second-place finishes compared to McLaren’s two. “The only thing that we want to try and achieve is to be P3 in the Constructors’,” Verstappen stated unequivocally. “That’s what I think the team wants, so that’s what we’ll try to do.”
The trajectory of Red Bull’s campaign has been a study in resilience and rapid development. Just weeks ago at the Dutch Grand Prix, Verstappen’s hopes took a devastating hit when he crashed out on the opening lap, leaving him sixth in the Drivers’ standings with 112 points— a massive 71 points shy of Russell and a stark contrast to the team’s lagging position, 236 points behind the leaders and 76 adrift of McLaren’s third place.
However, the tide turned dramatically at Monza, where Red Bull’s upgraded RB22 propelled Verstappen back onto the podium, igniting a fierce streak of six consecutive top-three finishes, including commanding wins in Bahrain and Singapore. This relentless form has slashed the gap to Russell to a mere six points, with Lewis Hamilton lurking just five points ahead of Verstappen.
Despite the recent upswing, Verstappen acknowledges that Red Bull’s progress is far from complete. “There are still a lot of things that we want to change, and I hope that it will bring the car a bit more together,” he admitted. “Of course, we have improved a lot this year, but I think we are nowhere near satisfied enough, so there will still be a decent amount of changes for next year.”
Verstappen’s blunt dismissal of anything less than first place in the Drivers’ Championship underscores his ruthless focus. “I don’t really care, because it’s only about first. So for me, I don’t care if I’m second or fifth,” he said, driving home his singular ambition.
As Red Bull looks to consolidate its position in the Constructors’ fight and prepare aggressively for the challenges ahead, Verstappen’s message is clear: individual accolades are secondary to team triumph. The battle for third place may be the headline for now, but the relentless pursuit of perfection continues to fuel Red Bull’s campaign.
