Arsenal travel to Munich on Wednesday with two Champions League wins, two clean sheets and a defensive partnership that has yet to face a challenge quite like this. William Saliba remains sidelined, while Piero Hincapié’s ankle injury has reduced Mikel Arteta’s options further. Bayern, meanwhile, have just put six goals past RB Leipzig, with Harry Kane and Luis Díaz causing problems throughout. The Germans have selection concerns of their own, but keeping another clean sheet at the Allianz Arena would represent Arsenal’s most impressive defensive achievement of the season.
Arsenal’s European campaign has started impressively. A 1-0 victory away to Napoli was followed by a comfortable 3-0 win over Lille, and Sunday’s narrow success against Nottingham Forest provided another clean sheet.
The results suggest that Arteta has maintained his side’s defensive organisation despite losing one of its most important players.
Saliba has not featured since suffering a back injury during the summer’s World Cup. His absence has forced Arsenal to adjust a partnership with Gabriel Magalhães that was central to last season’s Premier League title triumph.
Ezri Konsa has emerged as an important replacement, starting alongside Gabriel against Lille and Forest. As Arsenal-Mania’s recent analysis of the defensive options highlighted, the England international provides experience and reliability, even if the partnership is still developing.
Hincapié’s ankle problem has complicated matters, while Martín Zubimendi’s fitness remains another consideration. The midfielder could provide additional protection in front of the defence if he is ready to return.
The early evidence is encouraging. However, containing Napoli and Lille is not quite the same challenge as facing Bayern in Munich.
Bayern have scored 22 goals in their opening six Bundesliga matches, including six against Leipzig on Saturday. Luis Díaz completed a hat-trick, while Kane contributed a goal and two assists.
The numbers underline how difficult Wednesday could be for Arsenal’s makeshift central defensive partnership.
Kane’s movement is arguably the biggest tactical problem. The former Tottenham striker regularly drops away from the centre-backs to receive possession, allowing runners to exploit the space he leaves behind.
If Gabriel or Konsa follows him into midfield, Bayern could attack the gap. If they remain in position, Kane may have time to turn and create opportunities for his teammates.
This is where Declan Rice becomes particularly important. Arsenal need their midfielders to restrict passes into Kane rather than leaving the centre-backs to deal with every movement themselves.
Díaz presents a different threat. His pace, direct running and movement from the left could expose Arsenal’s right side if the full-back becomes isolated.
Jurriën Timber’s positioning and the defensive work of whoever starts ahead of him will be crucial. Arsenal cannot afford to give Díaz the same room Leipzig allowed him on Saturday.
Arteta’s best approach may be to limit Bayern’s supply lines rather than simply concentrating on their forwards. Preventing Joshua Kimmich from playing through midfield would reduce the number of situations in which Gabriel and Konsa have to defend against runners facing their own goal.
For all their attacking quality, Bayern are not approaching this match with a full-strength squad.
Michael Olise will miss Wednesday’s contest after being sent off during Bayern’s remarkable 3-3 Champions League draw against Viking Stavanger. Jamal Musiala remains sidelined with a thigh injury, while Manuel Neuer’s availability is uncertain following a foot problem.
Olise’s absence is particularly significant. He scored against Leipzig and has been one of Bayern’s most productive attacking players this season. Without him and Musiala, Vincent Kompany must find a different way to provide creativity around Kane.
There are also reasons to question Bayern’s defensive reliability.
Against Viking, they recovered from 2-0 down to lead 3-2 before conceding a late equaliser after Olise’s dismissal. Their 2-2 Bundesliga draw against Augsburg earlier in October also exposed vulnerabilities despite the team’s attacking dominance.
Arsenal should remember last November’s 3-1 victory over Bayern at the Emirates. Bukayo Saka and his teammates demonstrated that they could hurt the German champions when opportunities appeared.
That does not guarantee another victory, particularly away from home. But it suggests Arsenal should resist the temptation to spend the entire evening protecting their own penalty area.
Bayern’s aggressive attacking approach can leave space behind their defensive line. If Arsenal can win possession and release Saka or Viktor Gyökeres quickly, they have the players to exploit it.
Arsenal’s defensive record and Bayern’s recent goalscoring form create an interesting contrast for anyone assessing Wednesday’s betting markets.
Arsenal have not conceded in their first two Champions League matches, while Bayern have scored eight goals across theirs. The German side’s record includes five against Bodø/Glimt and three against Viking.
Both-teams-to-score, clean-sheet and total-goals markets therefore present questions that cannot be answered by looking at either team’s previous results in isolation.
Saliba’s absence could affect Arsenal’s ability to contain Kane, but the suspension of Olise and injury to Musiala reduce Bayern’s creative options. Those factors must be considered together rather than assuming that one team’s injury problems automatically favour the other.
There is also a distinction between assessing a betting price and understanding the company behind a gambling website. Resources such as Sisterguide examine operator relationships between casino brands, including Dream Vegas and its sister sites. That information serves a different purpose from evaluating Champions League odds, where team selection, form and the probabilities implied by available prices matter most.
The confirmed starting line-ups could change expectations considerably, particularly if Neuer remains unavailable or Arteta makes an unexpected defensive selection.
However, there is no verified evidence that bookmakers have underestimated Arsenal’s injuries or Bayern’s missing attackers. A convincing tactical argument does not necessarily mean the available betting odds offer value.
Wednesday should provide a much clearer picture of Arsenal’s defensive strength without Saliba.
Gabriel and Konsa have performed well together, but stopping Bayern will require more than individual defensive quality. Rice must protect the space in front of them, the full-backs must contain Bayern’s wide players, and Arsenal need to threaten at the other end to prevent Kompany’s side from attacking without restraint.
The clean sheets against Napoli and Lille have earned Arteta’s defence some confidence. Surviving Bayern at the Allianz Arena would make a far stronger statement. As with any match prediction, uncertainty remains, and supporters considering a wager should follow responsible gambling guidance on managing risk and setting limits.
