Coventry City suffered their sixth Premier League defeat of the season as they went down 1-0 at home to Fulham.
Both keepers made routine saves in an entertaining end-to-end first half when the Sky Blues gave a decent account of themselves with seven shots to Fulham’s six in the opening 35 minutes, albeit only one apiece on target.
Brandon Thomas-Asante went closest for City in the opening 45 with a low effort that was denied by Bernd Leno and a flicked near post header that sailed over the bar.
The home side suffered a blow just before the hour when Bobby Thomas had to go off injured, replaced by Stephen Mfuni, having defended extremely well to that point.
Lampard then threw on three more subs in Taiwo Awoniyi, Frank Onyeka and Ephron Mason-Clark in a bid to find a goal from somewhere in a finely balanced game that could have gone either way.
The deadlock was finally broken ten minutes from time when the tricky Oscar Bobb wriggled free of Jack Rudoni, pulling the ball onto his left foot and powering a shot across the face of goal and inside the far side netting.
STARTING FORMATION: 4-2-3-1/4-5-1
CARL RUSHWORTH: 5.5/6
Showed good distribution with his passing out from the back. Got down to make his first save to deny Shea Charles in the 14th minute. Rarely troubled until finally beaten from a powerful close-range effort from Bobb.
MILAN VAN EWIJK: 6.5/7
Made use of his long throw-ins into the box to put early pressure on the visitors and linked up nicely with Sakamoto. However, on the defensive side was guilty of giving overlapping full-back Antonee Robinson too much room to get crosses in from the left. However, he made some crucial interceptions at times, reading forward passes well.
BOBBY THOMAS: 7.5
Calm and collected at the back where he continued to look an accomplished Premier League performer. Took a knock in the second half and had to go off just before the hour in a big blow for City.
ETHAN PINNOCK: 7
Read the game well, making some timely tackles and interventions to snuff out danger.
JAY DASILVA: 6.5/7
Showed good technical ability to wriggle out of tight areas and get crosses into the area but had his work cut out trying to contain the pace of wide man Oscar Bobb
CALEB YIRENKYI: 6
Sat deep early on, getting his foot in and winning challenges, always in the thick of the action.
MATT GRIMES: 6.5
Worked hard in the midfield battleground, dropping deep to help defend one minute and spreading the ball upfield the next in a bid to spark attacks.
TATSUHIRO SAKAMOTO: 7
A decent outlet on the right where he twisted and turned Robinson to get decent balls into the box and worked his socks off to help defend when called upon. Excellent throughout.
JACK RUDONI: 7
Effective in the number ten position as well as pulling wide to link up with Dasilva on occasions. On most set-pieces and City’s most creative outlet. Beaten by the tricky Oscar Bobb in the box before the forward scored.
BRANDON THOMAS-ASANTE: 6.5/7
Displayed good energy and running on the left flank where he again started ahead of Mason-Clark. Got into good positions in the box and headed over from a near post cross from Dasilva. Forced Leno into his first save with a low shot across the goal.
SIDIKI CHERIF: 5.5/6
Put himself about well up front but nothing much fell to him in the opening 20 minutes. Showed terrific strength to out-muscle Castagne but then lost the ball to the full-back after he’d recovered ground. Need to see more from the teenager who eventually made way for Awoniyi.
SUBSTITUTES:
STEPHEN MFUNI (59 mins, for the injured Thomas): 7.5
Got straight into the action at both ends, getting forward to get a shot off, albeit high over the bar, and then cutting out a threatening cross at the near post. City's brightest sub.
FRANK ONYEKA (67 mins, for Yirenkyi): 5.5/6
Added a bit more guile and experience as City pushed for a breakthrough.
TAIWO AWONIYI (67 mins, for Cherif): 5
Didn’t see a great deal of the ball.
EPHRON MASON-CLARK (67 mins, for Thomas-Asante): 6
Made a decent impact and got the better of Castagne a couple of times down the left.
GUS HAMER (86 mins, for Sakamoto):
