Tom Brady's frustration with officiating was evident during the closing stages of the Lions' 20-17 victory over the Packers on FOX, and Pat McAfee took notice.
Brady's initial reaction came in the fourth quarter when Lions linebacker Derrick Barnes was penalized for unnecessary roughness following a hit on Green Bay running back MarShawn Lloyd, moments after a pass slipped through his grasp.
The call awarded the Packers an automatic first down on a possession that culminated in a field goal to tie the contest. Later, Amon-Ra St. Brown inadvertently made contact with an official, prompting some viewers to suggest the NFL game was "rigged."
"Oh come on, man," Brady remarked as the penalty was called. He explained his disagreement with the decision.
Brady added: "(Jordan) Love throws it over the middle. There are linebackers in the middle. He's just turning his right shoulder away from it. That's allowed 99 out of 100. It's a bang-bang play. I know in super slow-mo, every little minute frame looks like a lot, but when you're on the field, you've got to pursue that ball."
His criticism was even more pointed regarding the penalty that established the game-winning field goal opportunity. With the score tied in the closing minutes, Jared Goff connected on an 18-yard completion to Sam LaPorta, and Packers defensive tackle Karl Brooks was flagged for roughing the passer after contacting Goff a fraction of a second following his release.
The penalty advanced Detroit to Green Bay's 40-yard line. "No, my goodness, what is that? There's no way," Brady said. "Brooks on the tackle kind of makes a great play. It's a bang-bang play. He rolls off his body. It's a great throw by Goff. That's definitely not roughing the passer.
"You're just ripping through the line of scrimmage to try to get the quarterback on the ground. Look, I love Goff standing there in the pocket, but you just can't tack on 15 yards."
FOX rules analyst Dean Blandino shared the same view. "It wasn't late. His head is up. That's teach tape tackling. That's not roughing the passer," Blandino said.
Play-by-play announcer Kevin Burkhardt noted it was "certainly not a penalty, but the Lions will take it."
Observing from a distance, Pat McAfee suggested Brady's opinion holds significant influence. "I really appreciate Tom Brady's disdain for some of these Roughing The Passer calls," McAfee wrote on X. "He's an owner and one of the lead commentators. He's got a lot of weight."
Packers star Micah Parsons also voiced his frustration. "Let's just go to flag football if every time a QB gets touched it's roughing the passer!" Parsons wrote.
