Mike Penders is ready for action as Chelsea’s number one goalkeeper, and there are some nice stories to prove it.

With every injury comes an opportunity, and the horrific clash on Saturday that saw Chelsea goalkeeper Emi Martinez taken off has created a gap for young Mike Penders to take the number one shirt.

He’s only 21 – but it feels like he’s ready. He made his pro debut as an 18 year old and already has a full season as a starter (on loan at Strasbourg last year) under his belt.

Kieran Gill’s piece for the Daily Mail today looks into the keeper’s background and assesses how ready he is for Premier League action.

Sources at Chelsea told Gill that Penders’ potential is “huge” and that his ceiling as “absolutely elite.” He’s the youngest goalie to play for Chelsea in the Premier League, which says a lot.

Others who knew him as a youngster say he “eats” pressure and has an “unbelievable” mentality. That’s good – there can’t be much more pressure than being a 21 year old getting ready for your first run as a starter in the Premier League. Saturday afternoon is a life-defining moment for the kid.

In other news…

Estevao has a bright future, everyone can see that. There’s less certainly about where he will be spending it.

Josh Acheampong was excellent against Everton and now is the moment to get him onto a new contract.

There were three very positive things we saw in the Everton game which hinted that this Chelsea team may have turned a corner.
