League wins for Fakenham Town, March Town and Downham Town, but Wisbech Town exit FA Vase

There were excellent wins for Fakenham Town, March Town and Downham Town in league action this afternoon, while FC Parson Drove picked up a valuable point on their travels.

However, Wisbech Town crashed out of the FA Vase following defeat to lower-league opposition, while there were also league defeats for Whittlesey Athletic and Heacham.

March Town were 2-0 winners at Mildenhall Town in the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division, while Downham Town picked up a victory by the same scoreline at home to Walsham-le-Willows.

Fakenham Town also enjoyed a 2-0 success in their Isthmian League North clash at home to Bowers & Pitsea.

FC Parson Drove battled to a 3-3 draw at AFC Pegasus, but Whittlesey Athletic suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat at AFC Sudbury Reserves, while Heacham narrowly lost 1-0 at home to Brantham Athletic.

Fakenham Town secured their second league win in a matter of days and third of the season with a deserved victory over Bowers & Pitsea.

Jake Watts fired the Ghosts ahead 12 minutes into the second half before Charlie Mayhew marked his 100th appearance for the club by doubling their advantage.

The hosts were good value for the three points, having dominated the first half despite failing to make the breakthrough.

Watts fired an early penalty over the crossbar before being twice denied by brilliant saves from visiting goalkeeper Samuel Nwabuko – the second coming from a point-blank header.

Mitchell Rasberry was unfortunate to receive his marching orders late on after collecting a second yellow card at the Daly Group Stadium.

However, that could not detract from an excellent all-round team performance as the Ghosts continued their recent revival.

Meanwhile, March Town stretched their unbeaten league run to seven games with victory at Mildenhall Town to move six points clear at the top of the Premier Division.

Charlie Bowen put the Hares in front five minutes before the interval before Cavan King added a second for Ash Taylor’s side two minutes from time.

It was an afternoon to forget for Wisbech Town in the FA Vase as they suffered a 4-2 defeat at Belstone.

Kushan Lewis-Thomas gave the hosts the lead after 19 minutes before Ryan Lennon drew the Fenmen level from the penalty spot just four minutes later.

Belstone regained the lead through a Jordan McNally penalty in the 33rd minute before the same player made it 3-1 midway through the second half.

Sam Harris pulled a goal back for the Fenmen in the 72nd minute, only for Eyituayo Akinbulumo to restore Belstone’s two-goal cushion in the 83rd minute.

Wisbech Town’s misery was compounded by the late sending-off of Kern Miller in injury time.

Downham Town maintained their unbeaten start to the Premier Division campaign with a 2-0 home victory over Walsham-le-Willows to climb to third in the table.

Prolific striker Shaun Avis continued his remarkable goalscoring form, taking his tally to 14 for the season with his sixth goal in just three games, while Eoin McQuaid was also on target for the hosts.

It was another impressive result for Downham, who continue to establish themselves among the division’s leading contenders.

Meanwhile, at the opposite end of the table, managerless Heacham suffered their 15th defeat in 16 league games after going down 1-0 at home to Brantham Athletic.

The struggling Magpies produced a more disciplined defensive display but were undone by a second-minute goal.

Despite showing greater resilience, Heacham’s continuing struggles in front of goal left them empty-handed once again.

Former Downham Town and Diss Town boss Garth Good is believed to be in the frame for the vacant managerial position at Station Road.

In the First Division North, FC Parson Drove twice came from behind to salvage a point at AFC Pegasus.

Ashton Newton’s opener for the visitors was cancelled out by the hosts before the break.

The home side twice got their noses in front in the second half, only to be pegged back through Callum Brown and Harrison Taylor.

Whittlesey Athletic’s three-match unbeaten run came to an abrupt end as they suffered a 4-0 defeat at AFC Sudbury Reserves.
