Manchester United are facing renewed questions over their managerial situation after a difficult run of results intensified scrutiny of Michael Carrick.
With pressure building ahead of their upcoming Premier League fixture against Bournemouth, reports suggest the club’s hierarchy are weighing up alternative options should they decide to make a change.
Although Carrick is expected to remain in charge for now, the search for possible successors appears to be taking shape, with former Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe reportedly attracting significant attention.
According to talkSPORT, United technical director Jason Wilcox is leaning towards Howe as a potential replacement if the club decide to dismiss Carrick.
The report suggests Howe’s Premier League experience makes him an appealing candidate, although no managerial change has been confirmed.
Howe has been without a club since leaving Newcastle United by mutual consent during the summer. His work at St James’ Park strengthened his reputation, with the Englishman guiding the Magpies back into the Champions League and leading them to EFL Cup success in 2025.
The report also indicates that Howe would be open to considering the Manchester United position if it became available, despite not being in a hurry to return to management.
However, he is not the only name under consideration. Julian Nagelsmann is reportedly favoured by United’s head of recruitment, Christopher Vivell, while Aston Villa boss Unai Emery has also been mentioned as a possible candidate. Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler and Antonio Conte are among the other names linked with the situation, though questions remain over their respective availability and suitability.
Carrick’s immediate future remains uncertain following United’s heavy 4-1 defeat to Como. Captain Bruno Fernandes’ public comments about the team’s tactical approach have added to the scrutiny, while the club’s reported decision not to discipline the midfielder has prompted further questions about the atmosphere around the squad.
For now, United are expected to give Carrick the opportunity to lead the team against Bournemouth. But if results fail to improve, the club may have to decide whether to continue backing their current manager or pursue an alternative.
