Avery wins Rosebowl after Harraway's misfortune at Smeatharpe
Jamie Avery with the Benevolent Fund Trophy Rosebowl

THE concluding national Stock Car fixture of the year at Smeatharpe Stadium produced a stunning, action-packed event, leaving racegoers already pining for the start of next season.

Jamie Avery of Newton Abbot regained the prestigious Benevolent Fund Trophy for Formula Two Stock Cars. Avery had previously won the magnificent Rosebowl at Smeatharpe in 2021. However, this season had been something of a write-off for Avery, who had only made a small number of appearances.

Unintentionally, that did play into his hands, as Avery gridded on the front row with Sy Harraway of Weston Super Mare. They led the way for the duration of the race, despite chaotic scenes behind them.

Once ahead, Harraway extended his advantage and was comfortably clear when the chequered flag fell. However, Harraway then failed post-race checking with an engine infringement. That saw Avery inherit the win, and he was reunited with the trophy he had won in the pouring rain five years ago.

Jon Palmer of Plymouth clinched the Track Championship in style, by winning the meeting final which carried The Ladies Trophy.

In customary fashion, Palmer was treated to a champagne overcoat during the trophy celebrations, as runner-up Luke Wrench of Crewe, third placed Lewis Smith of Coventry and fourth placed Matt Stoneman of Uffculme each drenched the victor.

Boosted by a quintet of Scottish stars, the Saloon Stock Cars produced a mesmerising display of rough, tough Stock Car action. Precious points were available for the nine drivers contesting the penultimate round of the National Series.

Appropriately, that inspired some of the finest racing from Saloon Stock Cars at Smeatharpe this year. Brothers Warren and Harry Darby of Ipplepen near Newton Abbot shared the heat wins. Thereafter, Harry Darby scored a double success when he won the meeting final ahead of Jack Grandon of Southampton and Phil Powell of Taunton.

Of the National Series contenders, teenager Charlie Burgoyne of Stirling in central Scotland was the top point scorer. All of the contenders were presented with gifts from the Mainline Spirit Co ahead of racing, and Burgyone received a further bonus to reward his high points scoring exploits.

The BRML quartet of Lewis Fasey (Sampford Peverell), Macauley Mills (Trowbridge) and brothers Rob and Steve Bugler ((New Milton) took the £500 prize for Teamarama for National Bangers after a fraught and fractious day that saw controversial exchanges with the DWO team.

Racegoers will be hoping for a continuation of the battles when the National Bangers next feature at Smeatharpe for the Winter Open Championship on Bank Holiday Monday, December 28.

Ahead of then, there is the intriguing first All Fiesta Bangers day - Fiesta Frenzy - planned for Sunday, November 22.
