Former Clemson star lineman, analyst talk Tigers’ quarterback issues

A quarterback change is among the possibilities being discussed as Clemson searches for answers on offense. But Eric Mac Lain isn’t convinced a different player behind center would solve much with the Tigers still struggling to protect the passer.

On the Gramlich & Mac Lain podcast, the former Clemson offensive lineman and co-host Kelly Gramlich examined whether a healthier Christopher Vizzina should get another opportunity as the Tigers prepare to visit Florida State.

“If this was a competition in camp and this is how the guy who lost the competition is performing, doesn’t the other guy deserve a chance to see if he can do any better?” Gramlich said.

Mac Lain questioned whether Vizzina’s lack of mobility compared with freshman starter Tait Reynolds could leave Clemson in an even tougher position. Virginia Tech recorded four sacks and 13 tackles for loss against the Tigers last weekend, and Florida State has an obvious blueprint for attacking their protection.

“If I’m this FSU defense, specifically defensive line — copy and paste the game plan from Miami right here, do those stunts, do those twists and see if Clemson can do anything with it,” Mac Lain said.

His preferred adjustments include more opportunities for running back Gideon Davidson, easier throws for Reynolds and a greater effort to involve the Tigers’ receivers.

Those changes will need to translate into points. Clemson averages just 21.4 per game, ranking 111th nationally, compared with Florida State’s 31.6.

That difference drove Gramlich’s decision to pick the Seminoles. Despite Florida State’s defensive struggles, she sees an offense capable of producing against quality competition, something Clemson has yet to consistently demonstrate.

“I’m going to really struggle to be convinced that Clemson can score with Florida State, especially in Doak,” she said.

The Tigers will get their chance to change that assessment Saturday at 7 p.m. ET on ACC Network.
