While Week 7's performance from Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix may be too early to say he has snapped his slump and solved all that has been wrong with the offense, it was certainly a huge step forward for the third-year quarterback, who passed for 222 yards, his most since Week 2. Nix also had a passing touchdown, a 52-yard screen pass to running back RJ Harvey, and a career-long 62-yard rush.
Nix also made history in the 30-16 win. Nix became just the fifth quarterback in NFL history to pass for a 50-plus yard touchdown, and run for a 50-plus yard touchdown in the same game. Nix shares that distinction with Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson, then-Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields, Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton and the first man ever to do it, Brooklyn Dodgers quarterback Ace Parker.
Nix's 62-yard rushing touchdown also set a Broncos franchise mark as the longest touchdown run from a quarterback. He beat the previous long of 40 yards from childhood idol Tim Tebow, who had the score in a 2010 game against the then-Oakland Raiders. Tebow did his a little bit harder, breaking two tackles at the end of his run. Not that we're comparing or anything.
While Nix's performance is encouraging, as he pushed the ball downfield several times and trusted his legs, the true measure of if the slump is over will be consistency. Nix and the Broncos look to reverse the fortunes of their Week 1 loss against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 8, in a game which will have huge AFC West implications.
Hopefully Nix can have another historic output, in an already history-laden career.
