The first El Clasico of the 2026-27 season arrives on Sunday night, with Barcelona and Real Madrid meeting at Camp Nou in a fixture that already carries enormous significance.
Barcelona have been the dominant force in La Liga so far, winning all nine of their league matches to open up a six-point advantage over Real Madrid. Another victory would extend that gap to nine points and hand Hansi Flick’s side a commanding position heading into the winter months.
Barcelona’s domestic form has been nothing short of outstanding.
Flick’s side have collected the maximum 27 points from their first nine league matches, scoring freely and establishing themselves as the team to beat in Spain. Their latest league outing produced another statement performance, as they defeated Real Betis 5-2 away from home.
The Catalans do, however, come into El Clasico on the back of their first defeat of the season. Their 4-2 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League exposed some vulnerabilities, although there was little shame in being beaten by the reigning European champions.
Despite that setback, Barcelona remain in an extremely strong position. They have won six of their last seven matches against Real Madrid in all competitions and claimed a 2-0 victory in the corresponding fixture last season.
Dani Olmo, Roony Bardghji, Andreas Christensen and Eric Garcia are all unavailable, while Jules Kounde is considered a major doubt.
Flick is expected to freshen up his lineup, with Rodri and Fermin Lopez likely to return to the side. Lamine Yamal and Raphinha remain automatic selections in the attacking unit, while Anthony Gordon should continue on the left flank.
Real Madrid arrive in Barcelona with growing confidence after stringing together four consecutive victories in all competitions.
Jose Mourinho’s side have recovered well from their derby defeat to Atletico Madrid, beating Villarreal, Roma, Sevilla and RB Leipzig. The most impressive of those results may have been their dramatic comeback victory over Roma, while a commanding 4-1 win against Leipzig in midweek demonstrated their attacking quality.
However, Madrid still find themselves six points behind Barcelona and cannot realistically afford another setback.
A defeat at Camp Nou would leave them nine points adrift and hand momentum firmly to their rivals before the season reaches its midway stage.
Vinicius Junior is suspended, while Rodrygo, Ferland Mendy and Raul Asencio remain injured. Those absences significantly reduce Madrid’s attacking depth.
Much of the responsibility will fall on Kylian Mbappe, who continues to lead the attack. Jude Bellingham is expected to operate behind the Frenchman, while Arda Guler and Yan Diomande should provide support from wide positions.
Bernardo Silva’s strong performance against Leipzig could also earn him a place in the starting lineup.
Real Madrid enter the match in good form and possess enough individual quality to trouble any opponent, particularly with Mbappe leading the line.
However, Barcelona have been the most consistent team in Spain this season and should be highly motivated to respond to their midweek defeat against PSG. Their recent record in Clasicos, home advantage and superior league form all point in their favour.
Expect an intense, high-quality encounter featuring chances at both ends, but Barcelona appear better positioned to seize the decisive moments and potentially take a major step towards the title.
