India made an impressive start to the second T20I against New Zealand at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on October 24. Playing their 300th T20I, the visitors won the toss and elected to bowl first, with captain Shreyas Iyer looking to take advantage of the conditions.

India’s pace attack delivered early breakthroughs to put the hosts under pressure, with veteran seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar leading the charge by dismissing Daryl Mitchell in the third over. The wicket helped India maintain their early momentum as New Zealand struggled to establish a strong foundation.

The dismissal came on the sixth delivery of the third over when Bhuvneshwar bowled a good-length knuckle ball to Mitchell. The New Zealand batter attempted to flick the delivery towards the leg side, but the ball appeared to hold up slightly, catching the leading edge of his bat.

The ball popped up towards the cover-point region, where Tilak Varma settled underneath it and completed a comfortable catch. Mitchell departed for six off five deliveries, having struck one boundary, giving India their second wicket of the innings. The dismissal also showcased Bhuvneshwar’s ability to use variations to deceive batters early in their innings.

India continued to apply pressure after Mitchell’s dismissal, with Arshdeep Singh removing Tim Seifert for seven runs by bowling him through the gate. Prince Yadav then made an immediate impact, dismissing the dangerous Finn Allen for 16 by clean-bowling the opener. Glenn Phillips and Bevon Jacobs subsequently joined forces to steady the hosts after the early setbacks. The pair gradually rebuilt the innings through a combination of cautious batting and occasional boundaries.

India also used spin from both ends to keep the scoring under control, with Axar Patel conceding just nine runs in his first two overs. Having made a strong start with the ball, India looked to maintain their discipline and prevent New Zealand from building a substantial total.
