“Khalil Mack Trade 2.0”: Fox Sports Radio Host Calls Bears’ Jeffery Simmons Deal an “Overpay”

The Chicago Bears traded for Tennessee Titans defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons in exchange for their 2027 and 2028 first-round picks, plus a 2027 fourth-rounder. The blockbuster trade for the four-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle and a fifth-rounder was considered an “overpay” by a Fox Sports Radio host.

On Thursday, Carmen Vitali found the trade for Simmons similar to the Bears’ 2018 blockbuster for linebacker Khalil Mack. Chicago acquired Mack in his prime while surrendering two first-round picks, whereas the Simmons deal requires two first-round picks plus a fourth-rounder. At the time, Chicago was not thought to be a contender, but this time the Bears have the players to win it all.

“It’s an overpay,” Vitali wrote on X. “It’s the Khalil Mack trade 2.0. But the difference is that this time, the Bears have the quarterback. And the coach. I still won’t go so far as to say this is them in win-now mode, but I do think this is “look at the NFC right now, why can’t it be us?” mode.”

Upon being acquired by the Bears, Mack was signed to a six-year extension worth $141 million ($90 million guaranteed). The 2016 Defensive Player of the Year immediately transformed Chicago’s defense, recording 12.5 sacks in his first season, helping the team finish 12-4 and win the NFC North.

Meanwhile, Simmons recorded a career-high 11 sacks in 2025. In June, the defensive tackle signed a three-year, $105.8 million extension and is expected to strengthen the Bears’ defense.

NFC GM Lauds Bears For Jeffery Simmons Decision

The Bears surrendered significant draft capital to get their hands on an elite defensive tackle in Jeffery Simmons. The trade follows Chicago’s solid start to the season, placing it just behind the Minnesota Vikings with a 5-2 record.

NFL insider Jordan Schultz shared a text he received from an anonymous general manager about the Bears’ Super Bowl chances after the blockbuster trade.

“Respect to the Bears for doing that. That offense with this defense now makes them a Super Bowl roster for this year and for years to come without a doubt,” the GM said.

The reaction to the trade is mixed. A to Z Sports called the price an overpay, giving Chicago a B+ trade grade, while FanSided gave the Bears an A-.

The biggest concern for Chicago now is making sure it makes the best use of Simmons and his three-year contract. His long-term value over future draft picks is the point of debate on whether the Bears made the right decision with this blockbuster trade.
