Kentucky football hosts Vanderbilt at 7:30 P.M. ET in Kroger Field on Saturday, as the Wildcats will try to improve to 7-1 heading into a much needed bye week. We have previewed the Vanderbilt defense and offense that is very much in the middle of a transition year with plenty of roster turnover. This is a game Kentucky should be able to win the line of scrimmage with relative ease. Here are some offensive X factors for the game that can make an impact on Saturday night.
Kenny Minchey has been incredibly efficient this season under Will Stein and Joe Sloan, he avoids negative plays and know when he needs to take calculated risks with his arm. Minchey needs to continue to avoid those negative plays, but this is a game where he and the offense need to hit a different gear. Kentucky should be able to lean on the run game which will open up play action deep shots, which is an area Minchey has been exceptional in. Minchey needs to find explosives in the passing game heading into the bye week and this is a great opportunity to do so.
CJ Baxter was listed as probable on the initial injury report yesterday after missing the Oklahoma game where he was a true game time decision. Baxter is currently sixth among SEC running backs in rushing yards (484) and yards per game (80), he also is third with eight rushing touchdowns. Baxter has been efficient and he has shown the ability to create explosive runs. It will be interesting to see if Baxter is 100% full go this weekend or if they have him on a snap count to get him fully healthy into the bye week; this rushing attack will have a ton of opportunities for success in this game.
We have seen true freshman Kenny Darby make big plays all season, and we mentioned this offense has to create explosives in the passing game this weekend. This is an opportunity for the offense to have a great showing heading into this bye week and Darby has shown he is the explosive play weapon on this offense. I would expect Darby to get a ton of those looks this weekend and he could be a mismatch for this Vanderbilt defense. Darby is currently 10th in the SEC with 436 receiving yards as a true freshman and is the leading receiver for the Wildcats.
Jared Curtis is a five-star true freshman that doesn't have a ton of help around him, he has multiple interceptions and fumbles on the season despite not starting every game for the Commodores. He is learning on the job, and playing the quarterback position in the SEC at that age will create some hard times. However, Curtis is extremely difficult to bring down and he has a howitzer of an arm; Curtis will make plays on Saturday solely based off his ability to create. If Curtis can take care of the football, Vanderbilt can keep this game interesting.
Junior Sherrill is the only player on this offense that consistently helps his true freshman quarterback. Sherrill is a senior wideout that currently sits at third in the conference with 628 receiving yards, he is the Commodores leading receiver by a wide margin. Expect Sherrill to get a ton of targets in this game against a Kentucky pass defense that has allowed yards in the passing game. This is the playmaker that the secondary will need to key on every snap.
