Bruno Fernandes makes decision on leaving Man Utd in January after Michael Carrick peace talks

Bruno Fernandes has made a decision on his Manchester United future after holding clear-the-air talks with Michael Carrick on Tuesday.

Fernandes came under fire from United supporters after questioning Carrick's tactics in the aftermath of their 4-1 hammering at the hands of Como in the Champions League. He was then an unused substitute for their 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday and received a mixed reception at Old Trafford when he went to warm up during the match.

The Portuguese maestro has since faced intense speculation over his immediate future at the club. His current deal expires in June 2027, but Man United have the option to automatically extend it by a further year, and this is what INEOS plan to do.

Bruno Fernandes is 'fully committed' to Man United

After almost seven years at United since joining from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020, many fans felt this growing rift between player and manager would spell the end to his Red Devils career sooner rather than later.

But once the club told Carrick he would be in charge of the clash against Chelsea on Saturday following talks of him being sacked, the 45-year-old immediately held clear-the-air talks with the United captain.

Carrick and Fernandes met before training on Tuesday morning at United's Carrington training base. According to The Guardian, the 32-year-old offered the manager assurances that he is 'fully committed' and 'intent on trying to turn the team's season around'.

This comes after the Englishman dropped United's No. 8 from the starting lineup against Bournemouth, citing the decision to do so as "purely football reasons".

"Picking the team is always a difficult decision," Carrick told Sky Sports before kick-off. "We've got to make what we feel is the right one for the team to try to get the performance we want."

After clearing the air with Fernandes - who has already made a greater effort than usual to stop for autographs at the training ground - he is expected to return to the starting lineup when they travel to Chelsea on Saturday lunchtime (October 31).

Ashley Young slammed Bruno Fernandes' behaviour as captain

Last season, the Portuguese international was their most instrumental player, breaking the Premier League record for assists (21) to help his side return to the Champions League.

Fernandes' performances have since declined rapidly, as he's failed to score or assist in his last five league matches, with a hat-trick against Ipswich Town being his only standout display.

The midfielder normally sets the tone by driving his team forward, but he isn't leading by example in any department - according to former United winger Ashley Young - who slammed Fernandes as "selfish" for the comments he made after the defeat to Como and for not acting like a leader.

"Yeah, it's selfish nature. And you can't, for me, you can't pull the wool over ex-Man United players, Man United players, Man United fans," Young said on the Overlap Daily.

"Because for me, and you just go back to the Como game, he'll do half press, he'll look round, throw his hands up in the air, just for the fans.

"That's not a Man United captain, that's not a leader. And all he's about is stats. And I know, last season, incredible, 21 assists, it broke the record; it was unbelievable.

"But he's got to thank Michael Carrick for putting him back in the position to be able to do that, because he was playing as a number six, deep-lying midfielder; he was a number eight, he was all over the place.

"But to be a Man United leader and lead properly, you're a team player."

Man United will want to see a reaction from their most successful signing of the past decade, starting with an improved performance against Chelsea this weekend.
