‘That’s Not Happening’: NFL Insider Shuts Down Potential Steelers Wide Receiver Trade

Jason La Canfora recently floated the idea that New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson could be a possible trade target for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

“I’d keep an eye on the Pittsburgh Steelers. I’m told they’re being pretty ambitious behind the scenes and would love to add another playmaker. They’re sitting at 5-2 and flying a little under the radar right now. DK Metcalf has some limitations in terms of the route tree he runs, but if you were to add someone like Garrett Wilson to that offense, it starts to get really interesting,” La Canfora said. “With the tight ends they have, a running back like Jaylen Warren who can catch a lot of passes, and Metcalf stretching the field on go routes, adding a receiver like Wilson would give them another dynamic dimension. That could be a very intriguing offense.”

Adam Schefter of ESPN threw cold water on that idea.

“I was told last week, ‘No way they trade him.’ And I love these people that bring up Aaron Rodgers and Garrett Wilson. I don’t think people know that full relationship there. I don’t know that that would work. That’s not happening. Garrett Wilson’s not being traded to Pittsburgh,” Schefter said on his podcast on Tuesday.

Aaron Rodgers and Garrett Wilson had a strained relationship when they were teammates in New York.

The duo “weren’t exactly the best of friends,” sources told The Athletic’s Zach Rosenblatt. Rosenblatt also said Rodgers did not appreciate a tendency from Wilson to “freelance on routes.”

The Steelers are standing at 6-2 heading into the bye, so a big swing for a wide receiver could be in the cards. WR depth is a major weakness right now. DK Metcalf is not living up to expectations, and there’s a slew of injuries. Making a move for Wilson would be an ultra-aggressive move by general manager Omar Khan. It could also make the Steelers true contenders in the AFC.

Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. and Indianapolis Colts wideout Josh Downs have also been linked to the Steelers.

Both wide receivers are looking for a fresh start.

Currently, the Kansas City Chiefs, Steelers, and Washington Commanders have an interest, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.

“The Steelers, we’re told, have greater interest in Colts receiver Josh Downs. Downs, however, is Kansas City’s Plan B, if they can’t get Thomas away from the Jaguars,” Florio wrote.

Wilson reuniting with Rodgers would certainly send shockwaves throughout the NFL. But given their past history, it seems highly unlikely.
