Sheffield Wednesday forward Jamal Lowe has revealed his wife was sent a message racially abusing him on social media.

The comment was posted multiple times on his partner's Instagram photos after the 32-year-old Jamaica international was sent off in Tuesday's 2-0 defeat at Notts County.

The League One club released a statement on Wednesday saying "racism is abhorrent. It has no place in football or in society, and we condemn this abuse in the strongest possible terms".

"Bad performance or not, racially abusing a player from the team you 'support' is miles off it," Lowe posted on his Instagram account.

"Parents educate your kids, call out family members who display this type of sick behaviour.

"To think we're only one bad result away from being called a monkey is actually insane.

"This is happening way too often! Do better."

The UK Policing Football Unit have confirmed to BBC Sport that they are investigating the matter.

"As we have said repeatedly, there is absolutely no place for racial abuse, either online or in person, and anyone who believes they can hide behind their keyboards should think again," they said in a statement.

"The UKFPU condemns this abhorrent behaviour and we will ensure that, through our dedicated team of officers, we do everything possible to identify those responsible and bring them to justice."

It is the second time this year that racist abuse has been directed at a Sheffield Wednesday player in the aftermath of a game.

In April, an unidentified Owls player was targeted by what the club called "disgraceful and completely unacceptable racist messages" following a 1-1 draw against Leicester.

Wednesday's club statement added: "This is not the first incident of its kind involving our players, staff and their families this season. The continued targeting of individuals and their loved ones is utterly unacceptable.

"Only last weekend, we stood alongside the EFL in supporting its Together Against Racism campaign. Incidents such as this reinforce why collective action and meaningful consequences remain so important."

In 2024, the club was fined £12,500 and an Owls fan was banned for five years after Kasey Palmer of Coventry was subjected to a racist gesture during a Championship match.
