Celtic and Rangers stadium bans verdict after Old Firm chaos

The Glasgow clubs challenged the punishments imposed following disorder after their Scottish Cup meeting at Ibrox on March 8.

However, the Scottish FA Appellate Tribunal has affirmed the stadium closure orders for both clubs.

The immediate £100,000 compensatory payments originally imposed have also been upheld, although the terms have been changed.

Should Celtic and Rangers be drawn against each other, the home club will not be required to make the £100,000 payment to their rivals. Against any other opponent, the payment remains due within 30 days of the match being completed.

Both clubs did secure changes to the suspended elements of their original punishments.

The tribunal has removed the additional suspended stadium closures and further suspended £100,000 compensatory payments, which had been active until the end of the 2027/28 season.

Celtic and Rangers will also each receive £500 of their £1,000 appeal deposits back.

The clubs presented their respective cases to the Appellate Tribunal on Monday, October 26.

The sanctions stemmed from the Scottish Cup meeting between Celtic and Rangers at Ibrox last season, which Celtic won following a penalty shoot-out.

Both clubs admitted breaches of Disciplinary Rule 37, which relates to clubs taking reasonably practicable steps to ensure good order and security and prevent unacceptable conduct.

The original sanctions were imposed in August, with Celtic and Rangers each ordered to play their next home Scottish Cup match behind closed doors and make a £100,000 compensatory payment to the visiting club.

The revised sanctions mean the immediate stadium closures remain in place, but neither club now carries the threat of an additional closed-door Scottish Cup home match under the suspended punishment originally imposed.
