Jaissle on Elanga's return, 'pressure' and St James' Park boos

Newcastle United boss Matthias Jaissle has been speaking to the media before Sunday's Premier League game against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park (14:00 GMT).

Here are the key lines from his news conference:

  • Jaissle provided an update on Matias Fernandez-Pardo, who was forced off with an illness in last weekend's defeat by Aston Villa: "Matias has still some issues health-wise, so he can only train partially. Hopefully he can make it until the weekend."

  • On Athony Elanga, who has missed the past four Premier League games with a knock: "For sure he's not able to play 90 minutes, but he trained and worked really hard in the rehab, so I count on him for sure as he's hopefully also ready now to at least be able to join the squad. Then maybe it's the first time that also he gets some minutes."

  • Also providing and update on Jacob Ramsey, who has been out with an ankle problem, the Magpies boss said: "We're happy that he's back on the pitch. Also counts the same like the other lads who just returned that we need to take it step by step and have that load management. Really [so] that we're not taking too much risk."

  • On the boos from the St James' Park crowd during and after the 1-0 defeat by Villa: "There were already positive signs in the start of the season. Now there's a setback at the moment, and you need to overcome that. The disappointment of the fans is a part of the game. They're passionate, especially our supporters, but they're great and then it's also normal that they show the disappointment."

  • Asked whether he is feeling the pressure after consecutive defeats, Jaissle responded: "Well, first of all, I always said that it's a privilege to be the coach of Newcastle United. I would not say that's a huge pressure, I would use another word. It's a great and huge responsibility to take that job, to also lead them throughout the negative period. That was something we were aware of."

  • Jaissle spoke about this week in training after the defeat last weekend: "It was a week where we were fully committed in the things we want to develop. I think we mentioned also our potential. We managed the things where we can do better clearly in the post-match analysis, and from there we took then the steps to work on these themes. Now it's Crystal Palace and we want to show another phase, another performance, to be able then to get a great result and that means three points."

  • He was asked about 18-year-old midfielder Sean Steur, with the summer signing being an unused substitute in the past two league games: "We're all sure, the whole club, the whole coaching staff, and I think also the players, know what great potential Sean has. He also showed that there are up and downs already. Now it's time that he's getting that confidence, that matureness for a player who didn't have that experience in the Premier League. Also throughout the training sessions, throughout the training weeks, and we see that for sure as a long-term project."
