Former Newcastle defender John Anderson says Matthias Jaissle's side "got found out" in Thursday's 3-1 Carabao Cup defeat at the hands of Everton.
"There was a lot of huff and puff but there was a lack of quality in both boxes," he told BBC Radio Newcastle post-match.
"Jaissle has talked about being happy with what went on in the middle but worries about what happens in both boxes and that was proven tonight.
"You have to defend an awful lot better than we defended and be more clinical at the other end. We had a lot of the ball in the second half, yet we concede again. They were poor goals we gave away.
"It is a concern, especially away from home. It's another three goals we've conceded away and Everton were not great to be honest. It's not as if they tore us apart, they play on the counter-attack.
"We were naive in throwing so many players forward and left ourselves vulnerable at the back with the lack of pace we have in those areas. We got found out.
"It was very dissapointing. We had a lot of possession of the football but we didn't do enough with it."
