Ben Arbuckle emphasizes the importance of Oklahoma finishing drives

The Oklahoma Sooners offense has struggled for much of this season. The Sooners rank near the bottom in most statistical categories.

One of Oklahoma's biggest issues is finishing drives with touchdowns. This has become especially concerning when the Sooners get into the red zone. Oklahoma's red zone offense ranks No. 120 in college football. They have had 17 red zone possessions but only six touchdowns and seven field goals. This has been a major problem the last couple of weeks.

Against the Mississippi State Bulldogs, the Sooners got into Mississippi State territory eight times. They scored two touchdowns and kicked six field goals, missing three. Against the Kentucky Wildcats, Oklahoma got into Kentucky territory five times and scored just one touchdown. The Sooners kicked two field goals and had two interceptions, including one on a fake field goal.

Offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle emphasized the need to finish drives with touchdowns.

"Touchdowns win in this league," Arbuckle said. "They do. And we have to not be okay with, okay, we move the ball down the field a little bit. Awesome. Okay, we don't need to settle for field goals. We need to put the ball in the end zone. We had a few opportunities the other day. We didn't execute in some of those moments. And so again, I want Tate Sandell kicking PATs, not field goals."

With SEC competition leaving little room for wasted possessions, Oklahoma needs to make its trips inside the 20-yard line count. Upcoming games will test whether the Sooners can turn Arbuckle's message into tangible progress. Consistent touchdown production would ease the pressure on the defense and give Oklahoma a better chance to compete when games are decided by a handful of plays.
