Viking came from behind to beat 10-man Sabah and get their first win of the league phase in this season's Champions League.
The hosts recovered from conceding an early goal to secure victory in Stavanger, with two of their goals and Sabah's red card all coming in the second half.
Sabah had taken the lead against the run of play with a swift counter-attack, as Umarali Rakhmonaliev picked out Orphe Mbina to tap home from close range.
But Viking responded positively and were rewarded when Erik Botheim met an excellent cross into the box to turn the ball past the goalkeeper.
The hosts turned it around when Sabah were penalised for a defender handling the ball inside the box and Zlatko Tripic prodded in the rebound after his initial spot-kick was saved.
The Azerbaijani side's hopes of finding a way back into the contest suffered another blow when Aden McCarthy was shown a straight red card for a studs-up challenge.
Viking made their numerical advantage count when a corner was swung into the penalty area and Henrik Falchener rose highest to head home their third goal.
They took advantage of a calamitous Sabah attempt to play out from the back as Botheim got his second goal of the night, turning in from inside the area as the visitors failed to close Viking down in the box.
Both sides are enjoying unlikely appearances among Europe's elite, with Viking competing in the Champions League for the first time since 1992-93, while Sabah are making their debut in the competition just nine years after the club was founded.
They each have tricky games coming up, with Viking travelling to Atletico Madrid in their next Champions League fixture on 25 November (20:00 GMT) and Sabah hosting Barcelona earlier the same evening (17:45 GMT).
