William Byron narrowly missed his first victory of the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season on Sunday, finishing second in the YellaWood 500 at Talladega Superspeedway. The Hendrick Motorsports driver started 17th and worked his way into contention before crossing the finish line just 0.041 seconds behind teammate Kyle Larson.
Byron was among the strongest competitors throughout the afternoon, finishing fifth in both stages while maintaining a presence near the front of the field. His Chevrolet avoided the significant damage that eliminated several championship contenders in two multicar accidents.
The final lap presented Byron with an opportunity to steal the victory. He made a move beneath Ricky Stenhouse Jr. entering the tri-oval, but Larson carried additional momentum along the bottom lane and surged ahead before the finish line.
Despite missing the victory, Byron earned his season-best finish and helped Hendrick Motorsports secure the top two positions. He also made significant progress in the NASCAR Cup Series Chase standings, climbing three positions to 11th with 2,227 points.
However, the 214-point deficit to championship leader Larson mathematically eliminates Byron from title contention with two races remaining. He will look to finish the season strongly at Martinsville Speedway and Homestead-Miami Speedway.
