McInnes moved from the dressing room to the hotseat at McDiarmid Park in 2007 after the management team of Owen Coyle and Sandy Stewart had departed for Burnley.
After stints at Bristol City, Aberdeen, Kilmarnock and Hearts, the 55-year-old former Rangers midfielder took over as Ibrox boss in the summer and his “core values” from his time with St Johnstone remain in print.
He said: “I still look at my notes from stuff that I wanted to do, a lot of fundamentals as a manager. It’s more about rules and conditions about how we have to work as a club and as a staff and as players.
“A lot of the core values and fundamentals of how your club needs to work and respect, and how I expect my team to look like both on and off the pitch.
"A lot of things tactically I think I want us to be. Sometimes just a wee check, looking back. There’s a notepad I keep that I just add to every now and then.

“Just wee things that keep me reminded about what’s important. Because sometimes you just need that wee reminder.
“And I would still work strongly towards that. Those kinds of core values and stuff that I want to work on, how my team needs to look like, what my training needs to look like.
“Sometimes you’ve got to evolve and change, and players are different now. The circumstances are different in terms of the fallout when you lose a game.
“Everything’s magnified now, and everybody’s got a comment to make. Whereas back then, it was just really about working closely with the players.
“I enjoyed my time at St Johnstone. They gave me an opportunity. We won promotion in my first full season as manager and they were so good to me.
“They were really good and always have been good at giving young managers an opportunity so I’ve got a lot to thank them for.”
