Consistency is key to success in golf.

While it’s great to hit a pure golf shot one out of 10 times, what happens on the other nine shots is often more important. Improving your worst shot helps your scorecard more than improving your best.

Sergio Garcia is one of the most consistent ball strikers in the game, and he handed out three golf tips for amateurs to improve their iron play.

Sergio Garcia’s three tips for improving iron play

2017 Masters winner Sergio Garcia spent time on Rick Shiel’s YouTube channel to share golf tips, and he gave his three best pieces of advice for hitting irons consistently.

The Spaniard said, “What I try to focus on when I’m hitting every kind of shot, but obviously irons even more importantly, I think one of the most important things is to be nice and balanced. You don’t want to be moving too much when you’re swinging, so I like to stay on top of the ball and just kind of turn and turn.

“So that would probably be my top one. Then the next one will be to make sure that I stay nice and tall through impact, so when I’m here, make sure I don’t dip, give myself room to swing, so stay nice and tall and just let the arms and the club do the work.

“So you don’t want your head to be going up and down too much because then it’s going to be difficult for you to be consistent with your strike.

“And then the third one, for me personally, is to make sure that I get through my left side and finish nice and strong onto my left leg.

“Sometimes I tend to kind of hang back a little bit and get a little stuck here, so I want to make sure that when I hit, I’m finishing nice and strong, like 80, 90% of the weight is going to be on my left leg; the right leg is just going to be kind of like hanging there.”

So to recap, stay balanced, keep your head level, and finish strong, and you’ll begin to hit your irons far more consistently from shot to shot.
