Man Utd transfer target Dominic Calvert-Lewin is poised to sign a new contract with Leeds United, according to BBC reporter Simon Stone.
The trusted journalist claims the news will be a “blow” for the Red Devils, who were keen on signing the 29-year-old during the January transfer window.
Calvert-Lewin was being targeted to provide competition for Benjamin Sesko, who has been plagued with injuries in recent months.
The Slovenian international has been ruled out with a shin problem until early in the New Year.
After joining Leeds on a free transfer in August last year, the England international has found the back of the net 20 times in 49 appearances.
Calvert-Lewin has already bagged 5 goals this season, including one against Man United in the Roses derby earlier this month.
Several strikers have been mentioned as potential targets in recent weeks. Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta and Al-Ahli’s Ivan Toney are the two most prominent names.
Mateta is closing in on the final six months of his contract, and he could be available for a reasonable price in January.
Toney, meanwhile, will have 18 months remaining on his current deal at the turn of the year. The 30-year-old is thought to be open to returning to England, but his wage demands could be an issue. He is reportedly earning in excess of £400,000 a week in Saudi Arabia.
Younger alternatives could be considered. Freiburg forward Ivan Matanovic has been linked. The Croatian international has scored 7 goals in 13 appearances so far this campaign.
