Jordan Spieth had a confusing 2026 season.

At times, Spieth showed flashes of his former glory. One week his driver was a laser, the next week every putt dropped, and some weeks his iron play was the best in the field. But in those same weeks, other parts of his game would fall apart. He could never string everything together.

Spieth finished the season with 10 top-20s, but zero top-fives. He failed to qualify for the BMW Championship in the FedEx Cup playoffs and is still winless since 2022. His 2026 statistics also raise major concerns about his ability to return to his major-winning form.

Why Jordan Spieth is unlikely to ever return to his best form

Spieth’s 2026 statistics make for confusing reading. At times, every part of his game has looked either elite or amateur, and you wouldn’t know from the numbers alone.

At one point in the season, Spieth had no confidence on the greens. He couldn’t make a birdie putt, leaving everything short, and that cost him at The Masters. But because he holed everything in classic Spieth fashion at other points in the year, he actually gained 0.23 strokes with his putting in 2026.

Likewise, at times Spieth looked like the best iron player on the planet, but at other times he sprayed it all over the course. That averaged out at 0.32 strokes gained on approach.

What is your favourite and least favourite club in the bag to hit?

Is there a club you will avoid hitting at all costs at the moment?

That’s how Spieth’s strokes gained numbers read across the board. He’s slightly above average absolutely everywhere, despite not looking average at any point all season. Spieth’s either been incredible or terrible, but that’s averaged out to tour average at the end of the year.

On one hand, we know Spieth has it in him. He can lock in every part of his game on any given day, giving fans hope he can return to his best.

But on the other hand, how can we expect him to improve when no obvious part of his game is holding him back? The problem is both everything and nothing at once. How do you coach that?

Coaching Spieth is just constantly putting out fires. He’s playing whack-a-mole with every part of his game, and it’s hard to see how he can ever make real improvements with such inconsistency.
